Yep, guess what else could potentially harm in the same way...
Lingering particles from any sort of toxic 'cleaner'. Lingering particles from car exhaust or wood smoke. Lingering particles from any sort of manufacturing or industry. Lingering particles on food from pesticides or fertilizer. Bacteria... Smog... fungi... water... asphalt... Oh dear lord, think of the children...
Guess what people... There is a lot of nasty stuff EVERYWHERE that could kill you. Its a little side effect of industry, modern comforts, and most of all, LIFE.
Preaching to the choir here... but c'mon.
So dumb...

Before all this stuff was around people were dying much longer. Live life and be happy people. I could walk outside and be hit by a car. Do what makes you happy and live each day like it might be your last. I had an old vietnam vet ask me how my day was, i responded, 'eh, not bad i guess. How about you?' he said, "well, im ot getting shot at so its a pretty damn good day." i'll never forget that.

I was just making a statement. Better than seeing an article from this year. Maybe the author lived his life so carefully as to not do anything to hurt his health, and got run over by a horse...

As a scientist, the misuse of the term "scientific research" to justify any lunacy is infuriating. How was it studied, what size of a data pool was used, how was it selected, what kind of controls were used, how we're other potential contributing variables controlled, vetc. I suppose pure tobacco was burned in rat cages and then genetically similar mice were exposed to the residue?? Sounds like something one might find in the lampoon, "Journal of Ireproducible Results". I recall that journal reporting on a link between cancer and leisure suits.
If ther actually was credible research it should be found in refereed journals. I seriously doubt it.

Some people just hav too much time on their hands...that's why they have the time to worry about this crap instead of something really significant! :crying:

The sad thing is the guy probably believed the nonsense he was spouting.

My wife whole heartedly believes in the 3rd hand smoke. I am required to either change my shirt or wear a cover shirt, I have to wash my face arms and hands when I come in.

I thought 3rd hand smoke was something like this...
"Do you smoke pipes?"

"yes"

"It smells great, why type is it?"

"I happen to have some...Here take a sample nad let me know what you think"
What's next...7th hand smoke!!!

I heard about "third hand smoke" on an anti-smoking radio commercial last week. My head almost exploded from the idiocy.

@Hobie: Too funny.....can go in so many directions with this one. "second" hand masturbation? Doesn't everybody use two hands??
Can you get some poor innocent person pregnant thru second hand masturbation??
.... Anyway, as its been rebuked by a fellow piper who happens to be a scientist i'm glad i read thru the whole thread before I packed up all my pipes and tobacco that I've acumulated over the past six months and tossed it to the curb.

I've listened to a small amount of British political speeches but in that small number, the one thing this American observer noticed with them is that it seems imperative to slip in an all encapsulating slogan as often as possible (the example I'm thinking of is 'The Mess Labour Left' from a few elections ago) and that article has the same hallmark in the repetitive suggestion of banning smoking in the house and in the car.
Also I take issue with the suggestion that the cab of truck containing chemicals found in exhaust is anything but exhaust. As the good professor pointed out earlier, there needs to be compassion. But I suppose that anything pertaining to smoking does not require rigorous scientific vetting because we all know that tobacco is evil evil evil.
I also take issue with many other things on this topic but I need to let it simmer for now because I'm in danger of burning out the pipe I'm currently smoking.

It's funny this 3rd hand smoke thing. I also read lately that pipe smokers, on average, live longer than the average Joe. I guess our first hand smoke is the safest considering second hand and third hand smoke kills so many people maybe they should consider picking up a pipe? LOL

Wow I have never heard of 3rd hand smoke. Is second hand smoke a real thing? I know my mom and girlfriend get bronchitis a lot and both grew up with cigarette smokers. I don't know if there is a correlation there or just coincidence.
