I tried the hemp wick in my early piping days, when I was trying to avoid tongue bite and every time I smoked I'd get bitten. I bought a whole yarn and tinkered with it: never took to it. Somehow, lighting a lighter to light a pipe seemed onerous, tedious, and silly to me. I ditched it (though I kept the yarn: it's been sitting there atop a bookcase) and soldiered on with matches, Kiribi, Bics, and even a Zippo.

We just get tired of someone touting the wick using the same hype as those others who come and go every few months. It's the same spiel. The wick is ungainly, useless in a breeze and, to me anyway, appears to be merely an affectation for those who wish to be stared at.

I bouught a hemp wick set up and thought this is dumb"! But as I sat at my desk I started picking it up and using it all the time. The only place I use it is at my desk, other wise it's matches or a Bic. I like it rather than a pile of matches on a pipe bender night...

I smoke alone in the evenings so I don't use it for looks. Also, the bee line I'm using is the thin variety and is very wind resistant actually, and really isn't difficult to use. I'm fact we've had serious wind here the past two days and it couldn't be put out.

Also, I never meant to trigger anyone, I was just made a discovery and wanted to share it.

When I bought the wick I did think about buying one of those flicwic things, but the expenses started mounting up (specially when you factor in freight costs) and I didn't really want to keep buying thingamagig after thingamagig, so I never got one.

I use matches for first lighting and hemp wick for relighting.
I don't like butane not for the taste (I don't feel any taste associated with it) but because it burns at a higher temp than matches and wick, and I can feel definitely the burning from the butane in my mouth. It can be said correctly that it is just a matter of bringing the flame more far away from the baccy to bring down the temp but doing so makes more difficult to control the flame. The other advantage of wick in relighting is that you can easily put the flame down in the bowl. In addition hemp wick, particularly the 2 mm wick I use, is more resistent to wind than any other flame.
So at the end yes, I like hemp wick and I find it great.
