i like it if I have an uneven light on the false light, on the relight I’ll use a wick to zero in on the unlit section.
it’s mainly about low temperature though, IMO

I don't but the dust from the ferro rod still gets all over the place, just take a look at the nozzle sometime. I'm not saying it's necessarily the main health concern when one is already smoking tobacco but it's all cumulative. Not sure why some laughed at my original statement but I guess we are living in a world where common sense is hilarious to certain people lol

Been meaning to try for awhile as well. From what I understand one of the main points is also to eliminate the toxic rare earths and fumes from "flints" and petroleum lighters also

It's burning more plant material and creating more carcinogens than just the burning tobacco.

I have been curious about trying waxed hemp wick. Your endorsement of this brand and its improved performance has made even more curious. What brand were you using before? Do you think there would be an advantage to using the slower burning 2mm version from Humboldt?

Does much wax drip from the 1mm Humboldt?

I’ve seen some dispenser sleeves for BiC lighters that have an aluminum feed tube to automatically extinguish the flame and am wondering if you’ve tried one of these (or do you just use the stick/tamper in your previous post?)

the Humboldt 1 mm. burns slower and cleaner. no drips. easier pinch out. less smoke of fire by product. the best I've found. I've used a bunch of em over the years and had always gone for the cheapest i could find. This isn't the cheapest but it's worth a premium over the other stuff. way better.
I have tried some of the bic holders with winding space and even a guide tube. I prefer to use a stick.

Ive got no issue with it and honestly, Im not knockingit. I like rituals but I also like lighters (LAD). In my head I cant see a way that it isnt a bit combmersome having to light the wick, put down a lighter, pick up a pipe and then light with it with the wick. Maybe my brain isnt processing it correctly. Not that its hard but just extra steps.

I can see it working better if I sat by candle light in a den and reached over with the wick to fire it up. However, I dont do that. I use light bulbs

I typically clench a pipe while lighting the wick. The wick is really good for relights and deep bowls. The flame is easily controlled and when the wick burns slowly, (not the case with every hemp wick) a leisurely, calm, reliable flame helps keep you in the right mode of operation.

I agree. But I do understand the nostalgia behind it. Seems pretty cool way to light a pipe, no pun intended. My opinion, knowing nothing of the history, it would be a great way to light your pipe when no lighters or matches were invented and only a fire place and candles were available. Quite messy lighting your pipe with a candle. Lighting the wick from a candle in a cozy candle lit room seems pretty cool. If I spent a lot of time in candle light I'd consider picking up some. But with the ease and low cost of todays lighters,wick is not something I'd probably invest in.
