My paranoia re the future of pipe smoking has gotten to me. My assumptions regarding the price and quality of leaf in the future moves me to want to stockpile bulk blends. My questions:

If I order poundage from SP, do they come in one pound bags even if I order multiple poundage?

Are the bags good for long term or just medium term storage? ( acquiring the necessary Mason jars is an issue where I live).

I’m interested in some Sutliff blends and some C&D blends primarily, as my budget is limited. As a 71year old guy I’ve seen many blends disappear over the years and pipe smoking is one of my great pleasures.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ross

Depending on the blend, they are packaged by the amount you select when ordering. So if you click the 8 oz. button on the order form and qty 2 you’ll get two 8 oz. bags. If you order 16 oz bags, that’s what you’ll get. The 16 oz. bags are packed and sealed from the manufacturer, and are heavier plastic, so they will keep the tobacco for a bit longer.

Keep in mind all plastic bags are porous. Even the vacuum seal bags. So if you’re planning on storing it for years, you be better off to use a different medium. I prefer Mylar 7 mil bags.

As far as what you should buy... I can’t tell you that. Using the tobacco selection feature on the SP website will help you narrow down what you might like.

I wouldn't order bulk tobacco unless I had secure storage for it, jars or Mylar. But I was a fanatic about this. Other guys will say, "yeah, man, you know I bought a pound a few years ago but I never got around to jarring it. Did I lose anything?" Clueless. En route to you whatever container the blender used has more than probably been used by the retailer who stored it on a shelf. My point is that some, more or none care has been used to keep the tobacco's freshness and vitality.

I'm sure you can get secure storage devices online.

Good luck. It's never too late to start hoarding tobacco.

I’m happy my fav blend comes in a sealed, metal lid cans. Should keep nicely!

I’ve opened civil defense rations, large metal cans of crackers from well over 60 years ago and they were edible. The rats ? enjoyed em!

Thanks all! My problem is I want to accelerate my purchasing faster than I can acquire jars. Mylar may be the way to go with a metal container as pack rats are aggressive in Arizona. Thanks for all the suggestions.

You're very likely to find mason jars available online at Walmart, Amazon, Target, etc. Prices vary, but even during the shortage I could find what I needed online at a reasonable price.

I have no idea what types of blends you like, but I've found many Peter Stokkebye blends to be a great value:
Luxury Navy Flake, Cube Cut, and 702 Burley are my favorites.
