Help with an Estate Dunhill I picked up today

I need some help dating and getting more info on an Estate Dunhill I stumbled across today...it is stamped...Pat. No. 417574 111/3...I briefly checked the Dunhill identification chart....but since this is my first estate Dunhill I want to make sure I've identified this pipe correctly...and help with identification is appreciated...thanks

I will try and post some pics soon...from what I have read..I thought it may be from the 20s...I'm probably wrong...btw I forgot to mention that it is a shell

Thanks..unfortunately it's been polished so much that the markings aren't showing up too good on camera...I will have to try and magnify all the markings

That's the guide I tried using....this one with Patent No. is a little more challenging bc it is so worn..

I used an 11x lens with an led light held at an angle to read mine.

Yeah,

Sam is right about the patent # timeframe.
John C. Loring said that # was used on Shells from 1944 - 1954,

it's the English innertube w/ spring flange patent.
This is taking into consideration that the # is 417574/34,

and your 4 is worn?
There was a tooling error in 1944 and on the off chance that your slash is

backward instead of forward it could be dated to '44.
Circled group size numbers beginning in 1951,

so if yours has that then it's after '51.
An S after the grp.# circle was added in 1952.
Sometimes there was no date code printed at all, if yours has one it's most likely printed after the word England.

I have an old pipe that I think might be a Dunhill, but it's so wellworn that it's totally unreadable.

Sometimes there'll be mysteries that cannot be solved.

...yeah, I really love the gnarliest old Shells,

unfortunately so does everybody else and they're always $$$ outta my range,

I picked up that bulldog for like $7, it had the wrong stem,

but it sure as hell looks like an old Dunnie to me.
I have a '66 lovat Shell I scored for an incredible $5,

the white dot had fell out, but it had the best ghost I've ever encountered, smell'd like a very fine Lat, I reckon the old owner smoked Sobranie innit, I dedicated it to Blackhouse and it never fails to deliver a grand smoke.
Not so lucky with my only other 2, paid $120 for a '62 252,

and $140 for a '56 60 -- both Shells in very nice shape.
I'm still on the lookout for nice examples, but my initial raging White Spot fever has died down a bit and I've settled into more calmer waters, just keeping an eye out instead of frentic time-consuming searches LOL
