Using the drill bit method do you think? I wouldn't want to risk just pushing it onto something hard because I reckon that'll just make the open end a bit wider/thicker, leaving the furtherest end as thin/loose as it was. Might go and try it now with one of the older, not so precious ones.

Hiya Philip, thanks so much for that, will have a read through now - I just did the worst, cheapest, knock-about pipe with a drop of superglue run around the inside of the shank with a mostly stripped down cotton-bud (I forget what you guys call them, earbuds or something?) That seemed to work a treat so that's one way I know that works! now to find more that are a bit more to my liking, don't really like the thought of adding anything bonding such as glue, nail varnish etc. Warning - DO NOT stick your nose on the end of the shank & inhale after supergluing, eewww, you get a headful!
Only the tiniest of droplets is required when using superglue, it really does make the wood shrink quite a bit!

If you google 'Pipe loose fit' it brings you here, so worth adding my two one hundreths of an imperial english pound I should hope.

I just fixed a horribly loose (fall off if you move too much) but otherwise wonderful Savinelli Churchwarden with a goodly smear of beeswax, which has got to be better than horrid chemical nail polish hasn't it?

I had to create an account to say this so I hope it helps someone!

It's easier to swell wood than ebonite...I boil some water, put it on a Q-tip, swab it on the interior of the mortise..and the old dried out wood swells...Leave it overnight to dry, stick the stem in and you're good. ...Alternative is heat the tenon and stick a slightly oversize drill bit into the draft hole of the tenon(the smooth end, not the cutting end- let cool and you're done.)
