Vegas Baby!!!
no tattoos are fetish objects even if you don't believe they are. That's why I saw that thing happen to that squirrel that one time. :) After I got a new tat one time I saw a squirrel fall out of a tree at the top of a steep hill and slide on it's head the whole way down. Pretty gory actually.
You are incorrect. Tattoos are AWESOME.

I think a string is more to trigger a memory of something you want to do than it is to remind you of something not to do.
depends on what the string is made out of. Natural fibers are better for things to do and synthetics are better for not doing things. That's where most people mess up. Using cotton to try and not do something then they smoke more or gain weight or kill the inlaws (I assume the last one is more common than people think, or at least talk about).

I have a friend that has a tattoo of the same image as your avatar and he just started smoking a pipe a year or so ago. Thought you'd find that interesting though he's one of those people that switch jobs every couple of months, so I figured he wasn't you based on that.
oh and I know tats are awesome. I got a few and need to get a few more. Next one though is going to need a really good artist and a lot of free time.

That's what you get for having the Vegan 'V' tattooed on your neck.

oh god no. I get all weird if I don't get my vitamin B. The only symbol I have associated with groups that make people angry are on my feet and every once and a rare while I have to explain them. Though the only group I belong to that makes people mad would be assholes.

talisman and amulets are supposed to attract things to you. Or impart you with a type of energy (like bravery or strength of will) not remind you to pick up milk or whatever.
Talismans & Amulets are also supposed to offer protection from evil or danger, and that seems like what he's looking for, a symbolic object that offers protection against a temptation, not just something to act as a general reminder.

depends on the mechanism he wants it to work by. If it functions by reminding him not to do something then nope. If he wants to actually keep that thing away then yes.

Shucks. I was all warmed up to say amulet, but Kilgore Trout beat me to it. Good going Kilgore. Perhaps it is too religiously keyed, or taken over by the digital world, but icon also fills the bill, small figures or paintings that serve to focus on a belief. Good luck bracelets and necklaces and rabbits feet have also served this purpose. For a while, major league baseball teams seemed to all wear a specific kind of necklace that brought good luck. Then there are always the good luck key fob, t-shirt, pocket knife, belt, etc.
A charm. How about that? Or mentally, a mantra.

Well, I'm calling bullshit. If you're an asshole, like truly an asshole, why weren't you at the last meeting?

True, he's actually asking for two different things. First he asks about an object used to "recenter their thinking on a goal to be achieved?' That's the same as tying string around your finger, and it's simply called a "reminder" according to the American dictionary. REMINDER | meaning in the Cambridge English Dictionary - https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/reminder

The second part of his question is "someone who wants to quit smoking or lose weight would wear a bracelet they can grab anytime they feel tempted to make a poor choice."

That's a different thing. An object that's used as a protective symbol is an amulet/talisman, AMULET | meaning in the Cambridge English Dictionary - https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/amulet

The only other thing I could possibly think it could be, if it's not an amulet, totem, charm, memento, etc. is a phylactery. Definition of phylactery | Dictionary.com - https://www.dictionary.com/browse/phylactery
