I can't remember or find the right word. What do you call a physical object that a person keeps around or carries with them to help focus their thoughts or recenter their thinking on a goal to be achieved? For example: someone who wants to quit smoking or lose weight would wear a bracelet they can grab anytime they feel tempted to make a poor choice. Other examples may be an AA Coin or rosary beads.

It's not a talisman, totem, worry stone. I'm racking my brain and am failing at the Google Olympics.

thoughts?

An object of focus? Focal point?

The Object of Focus for Meditation Should Be: One Thing
The object of focus for meditation should be something that relates to you or speaks to you.
To choose a specific object to focus on helps the mind have something to 'latch' onto. This will help eliminate the myriad of distractions that are constantly happening in your life every moment.

Darn you! Now I'm gonna spend all day trying to remember the word... memento, reminder, focus point, good-luck charm, token, charm, amulet, phylactery, tefillin,... I'm ata loss...

I think for it to official be a fetish it has to have magical powers or help channel them, not just focus thoughts.
Isn't that the mechanism by which magic works?

I wasn't sure of what we're trying to think of here, but figured I'd give it a shot.

well that's a whole nother discussion really. I am going off of what the op asked. And thinking if it's just to help them remember not to channel some type of energy that fetish might not be the word they're looking for.

Oh. A string around the finger, then. Or a tattoo.
