Update:
Tried Backwoods Buttered Rum, and Backwoods original. The Buttered Rum wasn't too far off from that scent I remembered, but a bit more on the sweet side (missing that incense-like component). Both varieties were really just a nice, old-timey aromatic pipe smell.
And that's probably more or less the kind of thing I smelled as a kid: some brand of drugstore aromatic.

- that childhood scent is simply different from adult scent. And when we smell something for the first time, it hits in a different way than when we're used to it. At this point, I'm so used to all pipe tobacco that I'm just desensitized to it. Oh well - It remains the memory that led me back to the pipe after all those years, so I'll light a bowl tonight in honor of my old janitor
