Thanks, philobeddoe, but yeah, in Canada there is no such thing as drug stores selling tobacco. Also can't buy liquor/beer/wine in a grocery store.
rcstan, thanks for the clear and easy-to-understand break down of English vs. Balkan. Are those Navy Flakes VA/Perique or just straight VA?
It's too bad 4noggins is mostly sold out of all the mentioned SG types. The only good tin of tobacco I own is a SG Grousemoor aromatic, a very strong aromatic that at first whiff smells like a cleaning product, but now I love it.
The problem with starting this thread is there are now about 10 or more tobaccos I would like to try.

Ok, final order was:
Orlik GOLDEN SLICED for straight VA

Solani 656 AGED BURLEY FLAKE for Burley

A.C. Petersen ESCUDO for VA/Per

McClelland 3 OAKS SYRIAN for Balkan

McClelland EASY STREET for the hell of it.
:D I don't expect to love every tin, but I do expect to understand myself as a smoker a bit better to help me with subsequent purchases.
Big thanks to all those who helped with the struggles of a n00b!

Mick, half the enjoyment of our hobby is trying new blends and developing a rounded palette. I hope you enjoy the blends you ordered, and they lead you towards more smoking pleasure. Also, don't give up on anything after one bowl, sometimes I try something and really dislike it, later in I will try it in another pipe and you will sometimes be surprised.

You might noodle around on the forum and hunt down the thread(s) concerning the Canadian Box Pass. It's box of various tobaccos that gets passed around so folks can sample many different brands. It's my understanding you pay back by adding something of yours to the box: tobacco, pipes, etc and then mailing it along to the next person on the list.
I don't know if there's a qualifier for getting on the list - maybe having 50 posts for instance - but everybody in the States seem to enjoy the box pass immensely.

philobeddoe: yeah, I'm not the type to give up after one bowl, so no worries there.
fnord, I see the thread here. Interesting idea. I'm a bit too green to get into that now, but I'll keep an eye on that for the future for sure. Thanks for the heads up!

Mick, I actually registered with "mluyckx",which became a tongue twister for everyone, so I started going with just my first name. So not your fault at all. There's Aton of Dave's on here as well, so it was bound to happen one day ;-)

Some suggestions:

McClellends Full Balkan Reserve, a great strong Latakia blend. Or Peter Stokkebye's English Oriental Supreme, a subtler Latakia blend, more mild (only in bulk, but you can order just a sample..

McClellends Turkish Ribbon or Bombay Court, 2 lovely subtle orientals.

" Yenidje agonya, mild and very subtle Turkish

Peterson's Sherlock Holmes, mild and subtly flavored.

bulldog, make sure you dry out the Orlick and the Escudo before smoking them. I would suggest rubbing them out and then letting them sit for 1-2 hours before loading your pipe. You do not want to smoke a wet flake because it can scorch your mouth. Also be careful when puffing, you want to sip more than take big puffs, to be able to enjoy all the flavors they produce.
If you find you really like those two, get in touch with me and I will give you a bunch of other flakes to try. I have smoked a ton of flakes and have a large rotation of them. All the ones I smoke are no bite flakes with a lot of great flavors. The Escudo is a world class blend that most VApers are compared to. The Orlick is one of the flakes that turned me on to flakes years ago. It is a nice mild flake that is easy to smoke. I hope you enjoy them.

Thanks for the advice guys. Yeah, I'm sure I will smoke through the tins and make my final decision based on the outcome.
One small question I have is, do you suggest – when trying a new tobacco – trying the same tobacco several days in a row (I'm a bowl-a-day smoker) or each day a different one? I should say, I also have some cobs coming and I will keep them separate so as not to mix flavours.

Mick,

I tend to smoke more than one bowl a day, but I do smoke a couple of bowls of any new tobacco in a row. Usually in different pipes and shapes. Each tobacco has somewhat of its own character, so some go well in the morning with that first cup of strong coffee, while other prefer the quiet of the evening with a glass of scotch.
But don't fret. Do what you like, do what feels right and enjoy it. The rest will all come naturally. And there is not one single right way to smoke a pipe ;-)
