Help Identify a Peterson System Pipe

So it’s obviously a little old, has a really weird stem though. It’s a p-lip but the bore is actually positioned where a fishtail’s bore would be. It still uses a p-lip shaped button and opening though.

Is this a replacement stem or something? What gives?

It's a stem made by a different company - I've never seen a p-lip with the opening at the very end like that, but in the really old ones it was just at the top.

If you look at the cross-section drawings of the first p-lips, the smoke left the bit just at the top whereas in this design the smoke goes straight out the end, defeating the purpose of the p-lip which was to divert the smoke away from the tongue.

That's a nice pipe. Given its age it looks to be in very good condition. Peterson could probably fit a new stem for you,.

It's a Peterson 1890-1990 Commemorative patent system Oom Paul without the original stem. In 1990 peterson did a run of this shape and another, a straight Billiard System. The pipe you seem to have there is a rusticated version of the Oom Paul.

It's a Peterson 1890-1990 Commemorative patent system Oom Paul without the original stem. In 1990 peterson did a run of this shape and another, a straight Billiard System. The pipe you seem to have there is a rusticated version of the Oom Paul.

What's really odd is that the stem looks as old or older than the stummel, which is in decent shape, but it doesn't show any clenching abuse. I'm guessing the original stem was broken or lost, then the owner made the mistake of not going to Peterson for a replacement. I agree with @Hillcrest - send the stummel to Peterson for a new stem.

I could be wrong because I've never owned one but it could be a wellington stem, ive seen many pictures and discussions on them and they made pipes that were very close to peterson systems in looks but don't think they had the p lips.

I have several Wellington copies of this stem. Their p-lip was very close to some Peterson stems, but more 'bulbous' at the bit.

I hate to say this one looks horrible, as it's always possible that one of our members made it, but as long as they don't fess up, maybe I would survive such a comment ... if I were to make it

What do you think would be a fair price for said pipe with the stem, as pictured? Is this effectively the same as just buying the bowl with a missing stem in terms of price?

It doesn’t have the step down I don’t think either, I don’t know if it’s tapered like a p-lip stem, but it didn’t have a condenser or anything like that either. So basically half the “system” or more is missing.
