My son's birthday is coming up in a few weeks and I would like to get him a pipe. He smokes a cigar now but I would like to get him on the "right" track, so to speak.

I need a suggestion for a pipe or a maker that would be less than $75.00. Thanks for the suggestions. :puffy:

There are several nice Nordings for under that price, as well as MM Cobs for even cheaper...

This one's close. Maybe a little high.

Savinelli has several pipes that run in that price range that would be a great choice. Roma is a little known pipe maker that makes a pretty good pipe that can be had for well under the price that you are looking for. If you look hard enough you might be able to find a decent Peterson for that price too. Really just all depends on what you are looking for. The estate pipe section of smokingpipes.com is always a good place to look for a great deal too. Those guys take great pride and care in their restoration work and you can get a good pipe for a great price. Good luck with your search!

Well, if you're willing to go up to $83 I can definitely suggest a Peterson Killarney. I recently bought a 106, straight billiard, in that line and it's the best pipe I've ever bought. Great draw and the flavor transfer from the tobacco to the taste is unlike any other pipe I've smoked.
Also, word of advice check smokingpipes.com and their estates section. Sometimes they'll have system pipes by Peterson for $60 as well as entry level lines by them for $55 or so.
I'm sure you'll find the right pipe for the right price. Best of luck in your search and I hope he enjoys it greatly.

maybe you should hint some how about what shape he likes. That might help out a little more. I've noticed a lot of newbies I know gravitate to my Oom Paul.

Maybe a bit out of budget, but I've never had one that treated me wrong.

I personally would say a "new" good old Grabow to start, that way if he doesn't like it it's no real loss at $30 or less and with a quick break-in period it's more likely he'll enjoy it quicker and not be so concerned with the "Hassle" of packing style.

I think this is a good idea. You could get him the best pipe available, but if he doesn't like the shape or feel, he is not likely to stick with it. Has he ever admired any of your pipes? That may give you a good idea.

I'd get him a Missouri Meerschaum Freehand those things look sweet, priced at $30 and smoke better than most briars due thanks to the extra large draw.

Here is a thought. Buy him a tin of a tobacco, wrap it and with a note say, "You and I are going to go shopping for the perfect pipe to smoke this in. Happy Birthday". Then, that day go shopping for it. It will be more special if his input is in on it, and a valued memory that he can remember in the years to come, a day with dad, getting 'this' pipe.

Hey Pipeinhand, that is a really great idea. Thanks for that one!!!

You too Phillip. I haven't been smoking long enough to have more than just a couple and he lives a few hours from here. so taking him out shopping for one seems like quite a good idea. thanks men.

The gentleman who writes the weekly SmokingPipes.com newsletter frequently mentions his daily smoker, a Vauen. Their prices are just a little higher than your target.
