I have bought several pipes(briars). I have a dr. grabow (gave to my dad-in-law), a generic pipe (9mm)and got a Savinelli (6mm)recently. Tried smoking them with and without filters. I generally like bent pipes.
I liked the English without the filters and some aromatics with the filter. I generally will try it with the filter if I think the tobacco too moist for my palate. I have been reading recently about letting the tobacco air/dry out a before smoking. Anyone have comments on that?
I have bought between 15-20 different kinds of tobacco to try out. I am in Los Angeles so I am very limited for finding pipes and tobacco stores. If I find a store the pricing is about 2x the price online. If anyone knows a place please let me know.
I bought tobacco from pipes and cigars . com . Yesterday I had the Old Glory blend (by Russ?). That was a great smoke! I have also tried Captain Black, like the Gold blend, to Dunhill's Royal Yacht. Royal Yacht tasted great too, until..... it felt like I drank a bottle of vodka. I also tried an English blend that a local shop had. It tasted very earthy and floral, but not sweet at all. Just a couple of months into it though. Any suggestions on tobacco?
What I enjoy about pipe smoking? It makes me slow down and enjoy something. It something from the old world, it cannot be rushed. It has to be savored. I also enjoy what you guys have been posting on this site. I spent lots of time reading your posts and finally decide to join.

Warm welcomes, friend. I prefer my tobacco on the dry side, but I try not to dry it out too much, because it can lose a bit of flavor. There are a number ways to dry out tobaccos, and everyone has an opinion on them. For flake tobacco, I usually blow dry it on low heat until it's dry but not bone dry. With most cuts though, I just spread an amount over a paper towel or a sheet of paper for 5 minutes to an hour, depending how moist it is. Everyone has a preference on how dry/moist their tobacco is. Just experiment, and you'll find out. Happy smoking.
