Okay, that's how I have it at the moment (at least on the outside). I meant the stinger inside -- it should have the concave facing up, as Old Bill said. I may need to twist the stinger if it isn't properly aligned.
I think his main concern was that your stem is meeting the shank with no gap, that you might have a gap that is reducing your draw.

Sorry I missed some of this. I was out playing tennis this morning (not too badly for a 72 year old).

The most important thing is to have the scoop of the stinger on the bottom of the shank, parallel with the top plane of the bowl. I'm remembering the AdjustOmatic bent that my Dad tried and didn't like. I smoked it, but kept having to adjust the angle of the stinger so that the pipe would fit together tightly.

If this doesn't work, then I guess that particular pipe has issues that can't be easily fixed. I hate to see a new piper struggle!

Thanks, I'll give this a try.

Hi OldWill. I've taken pictures of my pipe and am including them here. I was mixing up my stinger with some on the web. I twisted the stinger so that it is perfectly aligned, as it was just slightly off, but my inclination is now to remove it (the consensus of this thread).

Before I do so, any words of warning? I believe I could pull it out with pliers, just as I was able to twist it with pliers. I don't see any reason to keep it.

edit: didn't include pictures.

Success!

Thank you both, OldWill and TheIronMonkey.

I removed the stinger and lightly packed some Quiet Nights that I had dried for 24 hours. In fact, it was almost crumbly, which may have muted the taste somewhat. No matter. I only had to relight a handful of times over the course of 40 minutes -- and then I only stopped because it was time for bed. I was messing around with retrohaling, which I enjoyed, but I mostly just left the pipe in my mouth and breathed in and out through my nose, passively drawing in and pushing out the smoke with my mouth. Very enjoyable. I think it will take time before I can really appreciate and acquire the 'taste' of the smoke, but I'm well on my way. I even blew a few smoke rings for the fun of it.

Although the very dry tobacco probably helped, I believe removing the stinger was the ultimate solution. Looking forward to trying the other tobaccos, now.

I'm quite happy with my Grabow now, but tonight's experience makes me want to head down to the shop and pick up a Brigham. I see why this hobby can be expensive...

Cheers.

Wonderful! That type of stinger, as opposed to the scoop type in your other pix, is completely superfluous, and can cause problems.
So happy for you, now relax and enjoy this pastime of ours.

Good advice, though I'm not one for dancing. Belloc was a very amusing writer. I need to read more of his work. I'm much better acquainted with ole GK.
