I'm new to the pipe smoking world (and even the tobacco world). I live in Victoria, BC, Canada now, but I'll be moving to Spy Hill, Saskatchewan in June of this year.
Nice, you'll be joining me in Saskatchewan! What are you going to be doing in Spy Hill? I've never been there, but have often passed by Langenburg, which isn't too far away

Thanks for the welcome, Fralphog (neat name).

Jiminy, one of my hopes in joining the forums was to connect with others in Sask. Yes, I just bought a house with a couple acres on the edge of Spy Hill. My wife and I want to run a small market garden in the long term. I'm very excited -- a house, land, and no debt. It would be unimaginable in most of Canada, Victoria very much included. It looks like a nice little village.

Yes, seanv, quite slow in Spy Hill. But I'll take slow over city-pace, any day. I used to live in rural Ireland where things didn't move much quicker. I quite liked it.

Curious, do you find it difficult/expensive to find pipe tobacco in SK? Taxes are higher in BC, but there don't seem to be many tobacco/cigar shops in Eastern Sask. I just ordered a few tins from Smoking Pipes, and I'm waiting to see if I'll get dinged.

Cheers

In Regina we have Jades. It is a good store run by a good guy and worth checking out. I don't think there is anything worth checking out in eastern SK area. You may have to do the online thing. Good luck with your plans in Spy Hill. It has a nice landscape and is close enough to Yorkton if you need something from a city.

Absolutely. I grew up in a village in SK, and still live in a small town here (North of you about 2.5 hours). Groceries and gas will be the big killers for cost (lots of driving to get anywhere), but besides the convenience I don't miss living in a bigger center.

Expensive to find locally. I'm not aware of any in Yorkton, which is the closest real city to either of us. I order online primarily, usually through The Country Squire or 4Noggins. Both are better at avoiding getting hit with anything at the border. However, my buddy has ordered quite successfully from SP on the regular. Actually, he claims to only get hit about 10% of the time with his orders, whereas I was closer to 50%. Smaller orders do better of course.

Sorry, quick follow up. By small, do you mean an ounce or two, or do you think my chances would be equally good with 200g.

Do you know roughly what you get hit with per ounce? Is it pretty consistent or completely random when you do get dinged?

By small I generally mean under 200g. It used to be that anything under that was pretty much safe, but it hasn't been like that for a while now. I haven't smoked much the past few years, so I generally type that line to get what I want in. My buddy will order monthly or so, but he keeps it under 200g per.

I'm not sure what it is per ounce. I was told it partially depends on where the order gets held up (customs in Ontario vs BC, for instance), but I'm not sure if that's true. I remember getting hit with varying amounts but never figured out per ounce. I do know that even after customs, it wasn't any more expensive than buying in a brick and mortar store. Mind you, I haven't been dinged for the past 3 years (perhaps due to reduced orders), so if that's changed I couldn't tell you.
