I've been following the forums for some time now and have learned a lots from you folks. Thanks.
I first smoked a pipe while at university decades ago. It was a straight, smooth Bulldog, perhaps a Medico (can't remember). I loved that pipe. Wish I'd kept it, but it vanished in the dusts of time. Didn't smoke again for a long, long time until I bought a Brigham bent Billiard years ago, but even then I'd take it out perhaps once a year for a smoke or two and then put it away. Finally, last spring I wandered into our local tobbaconist and looked through his wall display of MM cobs. Bought a Country Gentleman and a Legend and a shop blend aromatic and discovered I truly enjoyed the smoking experience. Since then I've bought several pipes, including two Savs, a Stanwell, a Falcon and a pair of Lorenzettis.
My main challenge is sorting out what type of tobacco will suit me best. As you know, tobacco prices are super high up here in Canuckland, so I'm doing my best to research before buying a blend I haven't yet tried to as not to throw money away. I've tried Solani Aged Burley, Nightcap and MacBaren's Mixture: Scottish Blend, as well as several tobacconist house blends. I like a mild, yet flavourful smoke with not too much nic-hit. So far it seems English blends may be the way to go. My next purchases will include a Cavendish and a Virginia, without much else in them, just to get the taste of those two sorted out. I don't think my palate is very discriminating, so once I find one or two blends that hit the spot I'll probably stick with them. But who knows? It's an adventure.
I love to sit outdoors with a pipe and my doggie by my side and watch hummingbirds slurping at the feeder. To me that's perfection. (The hummers winter here on Vancouver Island and part of my life purpose seems to be to keep a few of them fed during the cold.) Pipe smoking puts me in a relaxed, contemplative mood where time seems to stop or at least slow down... I love it.
Happy to join this amazing fellowship of pipe smokers and thanks again muchly for all you've given me already. I hope my contributions to forum discussions will be helpful in some way.
Happy puffing and keep the shiny side up (unless it's rusticated) !!
PS. Ah yes, I'm reminded I need to get myself a Zippo one of these days to complete the experience.
