Hello from Austin, Texas.

As a child growing up in Baltimore, we'd escape the city about once per year by traveling to Uncle David's place in Roanoke. (south, on Buck Mountain Road)

He had a small (usually dry) creek running through the back yard with a little foot bridge you could cross and then face a very vertical hill climbing 4 or 5 stories in height. We'd shoot .22 rifles into the hillside.

Uncle David made the best tasting pancakes but they were never round. Aunt Betty would make apple turnovers.

David liked driving MG cars, flying RC airplanes and fishing cold, fast streams for rainbow trout. Sure miss THOSE good ol' days.

Welcome to the forum!

Jay, thank you for the welcome. Buck Mountain Road has certainly changed. It has retained some of its' charm, but townhomes and condos now dot the hills. I bet those pancakes were good. Thanks again.

Welcome aboard from central N.C. My late wife (I'm remarried) went to grad school at Hollins College, and I had a long time friend, now deceased, who'd grown up in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., not far away. He was a big railroad buff, from a railroad family, a Civil War scholar with ancestry in the Confederacy who married another Civil War scholar with ancestry in the GAR.
Thank you for the welcome neighbor. I live in SW County, so Hollins is across town from me, but I know the area well. Roanoke was a railroad town for a long, long time. They have transferred all of those jobs to Atlanta since the Southern RR bought the N&W. Kind of sad. Now our largest employer is the hospital.

Greetings from Texas. You live in some beautiful country. My youngest daughter graduated from Roanoke College.

We enjoyed the music at Floyd’s Country Store.
Thank you for the welcome. I hope you didn't get caught up in that freezing weather Texas just had. That was terrible.
