Hey everyone, pretty much new to smoking regularly, though my initial exposure was 6 years ago. I have been exploring different blends fo about a month now to see what I like and have settled on english blends and virginias. Been having a blast so far, but two days in a row now as strange thing has happened:

Two days ago, I packed a bowl of Scottish Blend, to give it a try. A few puffs in, it felt like my mouth was coated with smoke, and it tasted like water!? I don't mean it tasted like nothing, I think the flavor in water comes from the minerals thats why it all tastes a little different depending on the vendor or location. It was bizarre, to say the least. This was my first time trying Scottish Blend so at first I thought maybe this stuff is tasteless. But that can't be right. Anyway, I figured, whats the point? So I emptied the bowl. I had eaten spicy indian food maybe 1-2 hours before so I thought maybe it was cayenne pepper that numbed my taste buds to the smoke. 1-2 hours later I had a bowl of Peretti 432, and it was great, as usual. Then the same thing happened yesterday, only with GL Pease Windjammer. It was my first time trying this, and it tasted great for the first few puffs and then I felt the different parts of my mouth start tasting like water, and then thats all I could taste from the smoke, but I could still taste my soda after I swished it around in my mouth.

My thought is that it could be the matured (red?) virginias that are present in both of these blends, as I do not think I've had such leaf until trying these two blends. There is no pain or redness, it just feels like the smoke coats my mouth and tastes like water. For science, I may try another blend without any matured virginia to test this hypothesis, and then try windjammer again. Or perhaps I should take a few days off? Been having 1-3 bowls a day for the past month.

So, what say you? Is it a reaction, fatigue, allergy, etc? Would really appreciate some thoughts on this!

Some people react to red Virginia in a distinct way, and that could explain it. Fatigue, allergy, mood, or something else might be to blame. People do experience blends differently. Semois, the Belgium burley variant, made a member throw up. I'd jar the offending blend and try them again in about a year, very carefully. Hey from central North Carolina, and welcome aboard.

Thank you! I just tried Peretti Tashkent, and all was well. I think I will give Windjammer another try later today, as I think both times the strangeness occurred it was on my first bowl of the day. If it happens again I may just take a break, and then try one last time with those blends and if it still happens I will do as you say.

Welcome from NC! Sorry I don't have a lot of wisdom to offer on your current situation. I would just keep experimenting and see if you can find a common sequence that triggers the "water flavor".
Thank you! Thats what I'm thinking. Current suspects are: first bowl of the day with red virginia, diet soda/ flavored seltzer just before, red virginia in general (which I hope is not the case, and if it is hopefully I can acclimate), general fatigue.

For science!

Welcome from SW Florida, yeah I know I have one foot in the grave.
Thank you, I'm actually from SE Florida! I hope you and your family/friends fare well with Elsa on the way. I don't mean to sound insensitive, but I miss the Florida storms.
