I took a Inexpensive basket pipe to Iraq with me on my deployment for OIF III.
I had my interpreter pick up a tobacco pipe in town for me. It is a really nice Jean Claude. When I ran out of the tobacco that I brought with me, I had to smoke Captain Black. It was the only thing my interpreter could buy for me in town.

Hi, I'm not exactly new here. I just haven't been on in about 10 years, and deleted the e-mail account and user information I used to be registered with.
I jgot started with pipes while deployed to Iraq with a couple Meerschaums I picked up there. When I got home I started picking up briars at antique second hand stores and got into refurbishing them. I'm not quite good enough to say I can fully "restore" some of them, but I do a fair to middling job and I have built up a collection of about 70 pipes, down from about 130 a few years ago. (Nothing too high end, but a few gems.) And I have a few dozen others in various states of wear and tear to work on yet.
On the smoking side, I 'd say I'm more of a collector than dedicated smoker. For some reason I've never quite developed the refined palate for tobacco some people have. Regardless, there's something undeniably charming about a nice piece of briar or a well-seasoned meer that pulls me in.
I'm always interested in more information on restoration, some of the different brands I stumble across and the history of pipes in general.

I've often said that if, for whatever unexpected reason, I had to stop smoking pipes, I'd still want to collect and display them.

When you do smoke, is there a tobacco (or sort of tobacco) that you find yourself enjoying more than others? Do you derive any enjoyment from smoking anything, ever?

Thanks. Beautiful pipe. You were definitely there during a more challenging time than I was. I got lucky to deploy in 2010, probably the quietest year there since everyone was just keeping their powder dry before the US withdrawal. Plus I was at Camp Victory doing Public Affairs stuff, so I wound up as basically a fobbit.

Uncle Teddy’s place! Seems uncle Josef’s acolytes did a number on that poor bastard. Unfortunate associations aside, that looks like a sweet spot. Been looking at small towns West of that burgeoning N/S corridor, but need to explore to East to the plains as well. Beautiful country and good folks in my experience.
