Just wanted to say hello as a new member. I tried pipe smoking briefly in my late 20s but didn't stick with it. Put the pipes away and didn't think about it again until running across them a year or so ago. I'm now 66, have added a few pipes to the old ones and I'm finding pleasure in an occasional pipe. I'm definitely a moderate smoker, allowing myself a couple of pipes per week. At my age, I figure the pleasure I get from a occasional pipe offsets any possible health concerns. At some point, you have to balance risk with enjoyment since something will get you eventually no matter how good you are. Anyway, glad to be here and looking for to the discussions.

Good for you for hanging onto your pipes of the past. I've had years of not smoking for various reasons, out of solidarity with my late wife for quitting a heavy cigarette habit, for one. I saved my pipes and therefore still have the first pipe I ever bought, a Tinder Box St. Ives, possibly made by Chacom, and a group of Iwan Ries house pipes made by the Edwards Benton series of oil-cured Algerian briar. The first pipe and the others all look great and smoke as well as any. I've gathered many more, some as gifts, two won in contests, and others I purchased. They multiply like rabbits. And I've culled the herd four or five times, though never the gifts, prizes, or early acquisitions.

the health concerns with smoking a few pipes a day amounts to the risk of tripping over something when fiddling with the pipe.

Welcome from Seattle. I grew up about an hour and half directly south of Memphis, so I spent many a weekends there in my youth.

Hell, my youngest's name is Memphis.

Enjoy your pipes!

Thanks. A lifelong Memphian, so I’m probably not going anywhere at this point — especially not with grandkids here. Pacific Northwest is beautiful, though.
