Hello everyone,

This is me saying hello from Iowa. I first came across this site about a year and a half ago when a friend introduced me to pipe-smoking. I liked it and wanted to learn more, and that led me here. Now, I'm finally stepping out of the shadows and joining the forum.

I started smoking a pipe while on pilgrimage in the Holy Land. My roommate was a pipesmoker and insisted that I try it at least once. He was insistent. So, I finally tried it 'just to be polite' and, well, now I'm here. I actually smoked my first pipe on the roof of the guesthouse overlooking the Basilica of the Annunciation, which stands over the ruins of ancient Nazareth. It was on pilgrimage that I started smoking, got a tattoo, and stole public property for the first time--not exactly what I expected when I set off!

One thing I've learned since I started is that I was initially packing my tobacco too loosely to keep the fire moving down the pipe, and I have a question about the tobacco I'm smoking. It's a blend of several different types of cut, and one of them looks like plywood for pipe tobacco. It comes apart in a zig-zag fashion when I tear it up. What is it, and how do I pack it?

Here's what I'm smoking and what equipment I'm using as of right now:
  • Pipes: a Peterson straight-bit made of cherry and a Mo Meerschaum with a bent bit.
  • Tobacco: Peterson Sweet Killarney--although I'm looking for suggestions for the next tin
  • And a Czech tool and a zippo pipe lighter to round it all off.
I look forward to seeing y'all around the site.

Hello and welcome from West Virginia. You went on pilgrimage to steal public property. I need to hear this story. Welcome aboard. There is a wealth of information that can be gotten from these fine guys and gals.

Welcome from northern Illinois.
Recently while camping near the Quad Cities I visited the Iowa 80 "World's Largest Truck Stop" in Walcott, Iowa. The WLTS, not too impressive, but the truck museum next door was a treat.
