It's been 9+ years since I lit up a pipe, and was never taking it very serious at that point (that was pre-kids and I had a million hobbies and all the time in the world - so cigars had always been my focus with pipes as an aside)

Had our second kiddo in March and had the busiest year of our lives - a pipe popped up in my instagram feed the other day and voila - my addiction is on - I'm older, I like fancier things, and I don't have much time on my hands... but instead of vegging out on the couch every night for two hours, I'd rather hop outside and smoke a pipe.

I currently own 4 pipes and never really knew about custom pipes, but after a week of nerding out on on instagram makers - I'm sold. I just told my wife I want to spend $1000 on custom pipes in 2022 - she said no.... (set the bar high... that way when I spend $500-600, I did good)

I'm pretty done with cigars, will still smoke on occassion, but they are too much of a commitment. I'm married, I don't need more commitment.

When I get into things, I get super into it - previously I never payed a huge amount of attention to tobacco, I'd go to my cigar shop, take the lid off a jar of tobacco, if I liked the smell, I bought a couple ounces and smoked it.

I'm now trying to figure out what to buy first to test the waters and find my preferences. I remember liking darker cavendish styles - but had no idea what that meant until I googled it last night.

I somehow came across someone talking about Vapers and specifically Escudo and I believe this is calling my name, but I need to get out, buy some and give it a go.
EDIT - I love things I can't have... and my search for tobacco to try led me to McClelland Dark Star (Personal Reserve) and I've GOTTA find some.... anyone know someone sitting on some tins that would sell one???????

Is anyone out there offering a good sample of different tobaccos to try, or do you all have a range I should try? (shopping around, I'm sooo lost by the names and trying to figure out what's going to give me a good intro to what I want)

Thanks!!!
Congrats on your new addition and welcome to the forum!

I recommend geeking out on tobacco before you geek out on pipes:

(a) Smoking technique will keep improving for longer than you'd think, and it might be nice to get artisan pipes when you're further along that curve.

(b) Also, since money is finite, tobacco can provide 100 different experiences for the cost of one artisan pipe experience.

But your call.

On figuring out what you like:
  1. Save money by buying 1 oz. samples of bulk tobacco, to start.
(But you will have to spend on mason jars, as they can dry out quickly in their baggies.)
P&C is disagreeable to me in some ways, but they do offer a ton of bulk very cheaply.
  2. Identify the categories/genres you do and do not want to keep exploring, right now. Get a few Straight VAs, VaPers, Burleys, Englishes/Latakia Mixtures, Orientals/Balkans, Aromatics, etc. If you try several of a category and dislike them all, turn your attention elsewhere for the time being. If you try several of a category and like most of them, keep exploring that category. If you can narrow down to one or two categories that you prefer right now, you'll have made the journey much simpler.

  3. Anything you don't like, keep in those mason jars long term. Revisit in a year or two. Your tastes will mature, and sometimes even radically change. You may be open to another category or two after awhile. Or maybe want to move away from what was initially most appealing.
Glad you're here!

Welcome, from Katy, TX, USA

I'll echo what a few others have mentioned - try a range of tobaccos early on, before investing in more expensive pipes.
For around $100 a throw, I've purchased 4-5 tins or cans, 4-5 pouches, and several small 2oz/4oz bulk tobaccos at a time. 12-15 different tobaccos to sample in one batch - plus it's just fun opening a box of 15 different tobaccos and eyeballing them all like a kid in a candy store.
I'm lucky enough to have a VERY CLOSE B&M store with a decent selection of more than 100 different bulks at any time, so I can even satisfy that "need it right now" itch when it shows up.
