Welcome.
The town I grew up in was on the edge of Central PA. But we commonly said it was in Central PA because our perception of what was central was skewed toward the biggest population centers. In PA the biggest population centers are Philadelphia, Reading, Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, Pittsburgh, Erie. So cities like Harrisburg between them we perceived as "central", whereas Harrisburg is really southeast-central. The true center is near Center County and State College.
Totally agree, I'm from Pittsburgh Orig. and never understood the central Pa designation.

I don't know where in central PA you live, but I can only guess you're from within a few hours of my home area.

Draw a horizontal line across PA and divide it into thirds or quarters. If you're in the middle third or the two middle quarters, you are logically in the middle section of the state.

Probably the area that runs north-south from York to Harrisburg to Selinsgrove to Sunbury to Wiliamsport is the actual eastern edge of the middle of the state. The Susquehanna River runs along much of that.

My guess would be that someone decided to make Penn State a college for the whole state because of its central location.

Alot of people from outside of PA don't know the small cities in the state. Besides, I grew up in a rural region. So I like to use landmarks like Interstate 80 to explain where I am from to people.

A lot of people have a rough idea of where Philadelphia, Scranton, and Pittsburgh are, so if you are a few hours or more outside of them, then from the standpoint of those spots, you are somewhere "in the middle" of them.

Sometimes I reminisce about the days when I started pipe smoking in the early 2000's. I wonder what I would have advised myself to get. The internet was in its infancy, so it wasn't as easy to find pipe tobacco shops near me with a big selection. Discount stores were common in rural towns, like the "Puff" chain. The one near me had the Captain Black series, American Spirit RYO, Supervalu, and others, probably codgers. I didn't know what was actually good quality. So I got Capt. Black Gold, Supervalu Ultralight, and Amer. Spirit Pow Wow Blend. Out of these, the last one turns out to be the most special for me because it is discontinued and had native herbs. Looking back, PA and Lane's would have been good choices. There was also a cigar lounge that had house blends like a Country vanilla blend. Later I found a pipe store in the Selinsgrove Mall where I got a Grabow.

What options did you have for tobacco in your Central PA area decades ago?
Nice writing with you.

Boswells has been around for a while and we had a few local tobacconists. but that was mostly all there was. Btw I live just outside of Carlise in the mountains. Nothing like taking a walk in the woods and smoking my pipe under the trees
