Hey everyone, quick backstory. My grandfather recently passed and I was gifted a few of his dads (my great grandfather's) possessions, of which is a monogrammed set of dunhill pipes. I am really hoping to get some info on what exactly it is I have obtained. I am not looking to sell them I would just like to know some history. If anyone here can help I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

Welcome! Plenty of help here. Post photos of your pipes in the "Pipe Talk" section of this forum under "British Pipes". Lots of Dunhill knowledge represented within this forum. You'll get some answers. Be sure to include the info on the stampings on each pipe. We hope you'll stick around and enjoy the camaraderie after you get your answers.

I guess those would probably help, sorry about that.

OH MY!!
DR stands for Dead Root, the highest grade of the time.
Dunhill's Shell stamping also indicated very early pipes.

Pretty cool family heirlooms you have. I think it's great that you want some info about them.
Thank you! I couldn't stand the thought of these going elsewhere. My Aunt snagged them from his house and asked if anyone wanted them and I jumped on them instantly.

Please, DO NOT learn how to smoke a pipe out of those!
They are very rare, early, and from what I can tell very well cared for pipes that are maybe over 100 years old.
Thank you for the warning. I want to preserve these and share them with my kids some day given the history they have. My great grandfather had a pretty cool story to tell and these will help tell it.

Any insight on what the 4th pipe would have been? I spoke with my aunt and all she said is it was broken some years ago.

It is nice that you value your great-grandfather’s pipes and want to learn about them. I would second Don’s advice to use different pipes to develop good technique before smoking these pipes. The decision to smoke these pipes would also be based on their condition. They do appear to be in good condition but I would defer to others with greater expertise than I have to weigh in.

I would love too if it is safe to do so. I know nothing about this hobby. I'm hoping to learn as much as I can

I would be really careful smoking these pipes due to their historical and sentimental value to you. I have a few pipes of this era and frankly I have been too chicken sh*t to use them.

There are others here who would disagree and say a great pipe is always a great pipe so use them..

If you choose to use them I would suggest you pack them lightly and sip slowly. Watch the heat.
