As my wife puts it, "You eat like a damned wood chipper!", and you're right, the grocery bill is no fun.

Whoa! Seven years ago, when this thread started, I ate pretty much any and everything I wanted to. Now in my 8th decade, but well shy of 80, I still eat everything, though with a bit more moderation.
When I lived in Winters, lots of home grown vegetables, much of it organic. Now, on the Monterey Peninsula, organic means more $$. Not worth it to me.
I never go to fast food places, and now seldom drink sugared beverages. When I do, it's Dr. Pepper. I take two cappuccino in the morning, and a expresso after lunch some days. Wife prepares pretty healthy fare- specifically, no fried foods, and when we go out, we have many great choices of good and healthy food.

Mostly vegetarian here as well; not militant about it though. Lots of "plant-based whole foods". It took a few months to shake the craving of fatty, salty and sweet foods, but now I only crave unhealthy food about once a month. Beans, greens, flax, chia, quinoa, fruit, veggies, whole grains make up the bulk of what I eat. I do eat sardines (packed in water or olive oil) a few times a week, though. And micro brew beer on Fridays and Saturdays.

I save money to buy healthier and better cuts of meat also-- cracklins and boudin balls. That's kinda healthy... isn't it?

To keep my diet healthy, I just avoid putting things in the microwave.
I threw mine OUT, just so I'd have to cook stuff. I've reduced my dependency on 'prepared' food.

My gut is a wreck with diverticulosis and it acts up at the slightest mis-step.

Fiber, moderation, hydration, whole foods as much as possible, a daily 2 mile walk and still I have bad days and more.

I've learned that I can also help things along with the use of a heating pad, when I've developed 'the bloat'.

I average about 3 or 4 days a month that are not comfortable, and sometimes it gets downright serious.

I think stress is what contributed to my disease, which is typically hereditary, and that smoking a pipe has helped me to overcome a LOT of that. (stress)

We live inland, but get some great fresh seafood through food co-ops, recently sea bass, ocean catfish, shrimp, and crab meat. My wife also gets fresh veggies from the state farmer's market, open all year, and from the co-ops. She is good preparing a wide variety of beans and greens, and we like bran flakes and the local excellent artesian bread. The discussion of what is healthy food is forever ongoing, but caring about it is probably healthy in itself. My wife, as a food writer, has long been a proponent of eggs (when they were out of favor), some fats like fresh butter and fresh lard for baking and frying, and a certain amount of salt. Cola is a rare treat for us, preferably Mexican Coke in glass bottles with cane sugar -- otherwise no soft drinks. Because of her meds, we don't drink much alcohol, a little wine now and then, and a bourbon for me a few times a year.

Kale, sweet potato, beans, red peppers, 3oz of meat, quinoa: helps to loose weight and lower blood pressure. 6 days a week. The 7th whatever I want.

I agree with your wife, and even more, some of the nutritional information backs her up: certain nutrients are more readily absorbed in the presence of delicious fats.

My first post, all true, is what I mention to my primary care doc. I don't tell about the Halloween candy leftovers and the milkshake from the ice cream stand.

I'm not into "healthy" per se. I crossed one of those dreaded round number birthday lines and noticed I was acquiring that old man bowling pin profile. Obviously, something had to be done! I tried all the fad plans, Paleo for instance, and you know, I thought they all were lacking in some meaningful way. That experimentation got me to thinking about my grandparents. They ate nothing we now consider appropriate, were thin, and lived long, productive lives. I took a chance and I shifted my diet to an old school program of "fresh" food. I found a local butcher that gets his meat from local farms. I get milk & dairy products straight from a dairy farm seven miles away. Veggies come from local farms or my own and on and on. It's a bit more expensive, but, everything is better and I eat with the seasons because that's what's available. My wife, who studied these things far more than I do, is happy because there are no unpronounceable chemical stabilizers/preservatives/colorings/flavorings in our food. However, diet isn't the answer.
The most shocking thing I did was to realize that it's not diet that kills you. It's a sedentary lifestyle that brings the true danger. So, I undocked myself from the couch and took up a much more strenuous lifestyle and shazaam! I can now eat all the foods needed by man with impunity! I get a steady rotation of steak, barbeque, bacon, and burgers. I eat nothing "diet," "low-cal," or containing tofu. Over the last few years I dropped almost 40 pounds, am much stronger, I get good reports from the doctor (We have achieved detente on the pip subject), and couldn't be happier.
Cheers,
Chili
