Have you ever thrown out a pipe?

I’m sure many of you have done it from time to time … what was your story or stories?

Never. Just because a pipe doesn't work for me doesn't mean it won't work for someone else. I have given away two or three pipes. Through better technique and/or patience they have turned into good smokers for those guys.

Many times. If a pipe fails to deliver, after a reasonable time, it goes into the bin. Simple as that. No stories or, tales to tell of interest to other parties.

I've only thrown out a couple of old over-used cobs, after the bottom plugs disintegrated.

Kept the stems, though!

Maybe 1 or two that I tried to restore and just came out bad.they were like $5.00 or something in an antique store basket. I did keep them a few years before tossing them though. I don’t think I smoked either of them once.

I did get better at cleaning up some estates, restoration is for pros or those with more patience

I can’t even bring myself to toss horribly funky ElMorjane pipes I picked up…

You betcha. I've thrown away many things, things I shouldn't have, pipes included. Guns, tools, clothing, women. I'm currently debating tossing a pair of barely worn Lucchese cowboy boots. (They're overrated crap.) I must be getting old--I never used to "debate."

Life is short. A pipe should be enjoyed, not become a source of frustration nor suffering (when a pipe is really awful, and there are many out there). A good quality pipe should provide pleasure from the start, or after a few pipefuls.

With this in mind, I have sold some. I have donated quite a bit for veterans. Those who were decent but were not for me. I have thrown some in the garbage bin. And I have burned some, the nasty ones, the truly evil ones, in my wood stove.

I have done the same with tobacco.

As a rookie, a very green rookie, I broke a corn cob. Now that I'm a rookie, I haven't made the same rookie mistake again. I softened the cob too much with an alcohol bath, drowning it so much that the stalk came off. Thank God I haven't had the same bad luck with briar pipes.

I’ve thrown away more pipes than I care to divulge.

Various reasons.

The most memorable was a pipe that I just paid to have restemmed and restored. I paid the freight and when the pipe arrived the airway was completely blocked with epoxy. I contacted the restorer and he blamed an apprentice. The epoxy was used to secure a silver ferrule. He offered to make it right by fixing it if I sent the pipe back. I’m not exactly in the business of sending the pig to the butcher twice, so it met the circular file and I do what I do and moved on.
