Spent some years in the navy a long time ago and pipe smoking on ship was one of lifes few pleasures. Still bring and smoke my pipes at the shore in Maine, and like others have suggested I always have a windscreen for the blustery days.
Surf casting from Chappaquiddick Island with my Randy Wiley Capt. Earle pipe. Works OK on calm days. I have a few pipes with windscreens for when the breeze kicks up.
On a different note the Hudson valley Pipe Club used to hold it's meeting at a restaurant in Cold Spring NY, right on the side of the river. One month one of our founding members was a bit early for the meeting and took a stroll long the quay. Thought he saw something down in the water and a nice pre-transition Barling dropped out of his top pocket and sank out of sight. Guess the wood wasn't that light.
Be careful out there...
I often smoke on Lake Pontchartrain, and when I visit Bay Saint Louis to walk the beaches there. I dont smoke aro's when close to the water like that, but Balkans or natural burleys smoke fine.
Now that looks like a fine way to spend an afternoon Rob!
I have to remember to pick up some windcaps from Boswells on the next visit. They're only $2.50....
It is 66 degrees today here in MD but too breezy for my pipes. An outside smoke sure would be inviting.
Boswell also makes occasionally "Fishing Pipe" with metal band, windcap and attached lanyard to avoid those heart-breaking drops into the drink....
Al, I try to spend at least a week there every year, they have a surf derby every Sep/Oct. The summer crowds are gone and people are fishing everywhere.
BTW, Orlik made a line of pipes with integral wind screens, The Hurricane was the name. I also have a similar pipe with just the name Typhoon on it.
