hi all

so I have taken the plunge and bought my first pipe - it was a toss up between a Butz Choquin Junior Super Calabash Bent Fishtail Pipe and a Savinelli Tortuga 129 Rustic Straight 6mm Fishtail Pipe. Totally unsimilar in looks but I liked them both the same. My choice was the Savinelli, I can't wait it to arrive!

It’s good to start with a filter before you get the full hang of smoking without bite. BC makes a great pipe though too.

Savinelli is a good choice. I think Butz Choquin is no longer made, but I could be wrong. Never smoked one, but heard good things about them.

Congratulations! They're both fine, never had a bad BC or Savinelli. But more importantly, what tobacco d'ja get?

I think the bet was rigged. Just kidding. Either one would be a fine pipe to own, and you'll be pleased with the Savinelli, and you might think about the BC when you go shopping for another pipe. French pipes are excellent quality, above their price level, as are most Sav's.

I smoke gwaith holgarth medium blend in my rollies, so I have kept to the same brand. Golden rum, mixed toffee and mixed black cherry. I think the whole reason I have decided to try the pipe is because flavoured rolling tobacco is banned in the UK since a year or so, and I can no longer or enjoy my favorite flavours. I'm hoping this change will fill the gap

I'm sure you'll find great flavors and enjoy the pipe. But, just in case you were unaware, Gawith Hoggarth also has little spray bottles of flavouring you can adjust blends to your taste. Believe this was done specifically in response to the ban.

yes, I tried the spray, as directed in the instuctions, and as not directed in the de - structions, it was never the same as bought from the shop and settled for a halfzware which I use now. It is still a nice smoke but the idea is rollies for work, pipe for when I'm back home in the chair

Around ten years ago I switched from a 40-a-day cigarette habit to a pipe.
My only regret is not doing it a lot sooner.

Consider getting yourself a pipe with a small bowl for a quick smoke break at work.
I've got several pipes with small bowls. One is a bent Dr Grabow Duke. A good smoker for a very reasonable price [Around $32 IIRC]

You won't be disappointed by a Savinelli.Solid,well made no matter the price range.
Better,and more consistent than some of the high priced rubbish available on the internet.If you're concerned about money,Dr.Grabow pipes work, also.I own some, and the drillings are straight, all the bores concentric.But that's just MY opinion.

As several have mentioned, you were set up for success and will find you Savinelli to be an excellent pipe. It is also good you have a sense of some tobacco to start with that you will enjoy. There is also the opportunity to explore many blends as you continue with your pipe. Welcome to the forum!

I also heard BC had discontinued production, but I still see an array of their pipes for sale, so these may be stock inventory. I've found my several BC to be durable high quality. If you can get them at a good price, and you like the look, I highly recommend them, and most well-known French brands.

Yes. You made the classic beginners mistake of only buying one pipe. Having only one pipe is like having only one pair of socks or one tool in your toolbox. You are starting out with amazing tobacco so treat it to a few different pipes.

Personally i would not have gone with the filter pipe. In my experience whatever supposed improvement filters are supposed to provide are offset by the pita of fiddling with them.

I think Savinelli includes an adapter with their pipes, for the discerning filter hater.

Yeah if you choose to use the adapter, you can mess around with a dirty adapter every time you clean your pipe
