I find that my mouth experiences several days of feeling burnt after smoking English tobaccos. It could be the Latakia or the orientals (or something else). This has happened with Skiff, Timms English 1000, Petersons 965, and others. I quite like Latakia. My questions is this: has anyone here ever overcome such a problem? I’m thinking of selling my tobacco and that is why I ask. Give up and recoup my losses or hang on to the jars? I wouldn’t mind selling them if the chance is low that this is going to go away. I know answers are anecdotal and there’s no way to know for sure…

ETA: I mean selling only my English tobaccos. I’m wondering if I should just move on to the tobaccos that I know I enjoy without hassle. I know there are other people here who have a problem with a particular kind of tobacco. My question is if they’ve ever found that problem to subside at a later point.

I smoke quite a lot of latakia, so far I haven't had or have any problem. Maybe you should give yourself some time, if you say you love latakia. But if that burn persists over time, every time you smoke it, then it may be that your palate does not accept this tobacco.

Does this happen no matter how you smoke? Meaning, if you were to pack a smaller pipe like a MM Mini...or maybe a dwarf cobbit (I think that's the smaller of the cobbits), would you still get the reaction? Or perhaps a long churchwarden would help? I guess it all depends on the type of allergic reaction you are getting, but just tossing out ideas before you throw in the towel.

It might not hurt to hold on to them for a bit longer. I go in spells with Latakia blends. Generally, I smoke Latakia blends only occasionally but enjoy them when I do. Granted, I do not experience the symptoms you describe. But you may try coming back to them once in awhile to see if they react/taste differently to you over time. It would be a shame to sell everything off only to find out later that you're able to enjoy them fully once again.

I’m not sure but I got sick of going through the unpleasant experience. I like Latakia so much that I didn’t realize that this was the problem. For a while, I just thought I couldn’t tolerate pipes because I was smoking these blends all the time. Then, I smoked a Virginia, which I haven’t really enjoyed as much, and had no problem. Since then, I’ve been smoking Virginias and some aromatics without hassle. I can take your advice and experiment some day again but I gotta take a long break from that. It’s three or four days of a burnt mouth after an English blend

yes. I could hold on to the jars for a year and try again then. I love the Plum Pudding reserve. I just can’t stand the idea of getting rid of it. But I cannot smoke it now.

I would jar them up and wait a bit but that’s up to you. What are you drinking with your pipe when you smoke Latakia blends? Maybe a filter could help if you’re not already using one.

My love for latakia waxes and wanes with the seasons. Some, I prefer more in the summer, like cigar blends with latakia, and others I prefer when it gets really cold, like Star of the East.

I am currently abstaining from smoking, as I have an appointment with an allergist this week. Something has been triggering my sinuses since I had covid last year. And, I have to lay off of all meds and nicotine till after the test. I certainly hope that they don't tell me that I now have an allergy to tobacco. That said, after my initial talk with the allergist, an allergy to a certain blend of tobacco would look like a triggered sinus attack, with flowing mucus and a cough. I will ask more questions at the appointment, but they did say that an allergy to tobacco wouldn't just be a sore mouth or tongue. I was suggesting anything to exclude tobacco from the test, because I really didn't want to give it up for a week.

Also if you haven’t, try these blends in a 9mm filter pipe with a charcoal filter. If that doesn’t help, it’s your chemical reaction to the tobacco

Have you tried biotene mouthwash after you smoke? Sometimes when my mouth feels funky after I smoke I’ll drink a little milk and that seems to help me.

I have it, yes. It doesn’t help. I don’t think there’s any way to counter it. And I think the reaction is almost immediate. English blends even feel hotter in my mouth somehow.

I wouldn’t sweat it. Just abstain from Latakia for a while and then maybe things will change. And maybe not. Either way, your tobacco will be more valuable and you will be able to unload it.

When I first started smoking a pipe, I really enjoyed Latakia. Now, not so much. My tastes have changed. And they may change again. So I am holding on to my good English blends. I figure after another 5 years or so if I really don’t want it, somebody will.
