BEFORE I smoked a pipe, I had smoked cigarettes. I had quit the sonsabitches for a year or more several times.
Some of those 'quits' lasted for 5 years or more. At least 3 were 5 years to 7 years in duration.
Each time, something stressful in my life caused me to 'weaken' and return to tobacco and nicotine for some sort of relief.
Nicotine habituation resides in the recesses of my brain even when I've quit. I really enjoyed NOT smoking and all the health benefits I experienced. Still, I'm an emotional being and there is a calming effect that can be derived from nicotine, even when smoked in the form of a cigarette.
Luckily, I'm also a cheap bastard and usually have rolled my own using a more pure form of tobacco. I discovered that my lungs were averse to the papers I used, seemingly more than the tobacco.
One day, frustrated about cigarette papers, I went to the drug store and bought a Legend.
Since then I've been on a journey of learning about pipes and tobacco that has been both rewarding and much more satisfying than simple nicotine addiction.
Which blend shall I put in which bowl? How shall I prepare the tobacco before I pack my pipe? What will I use to ignite my tasty leaf? My lungs have been clear and my habit assuaged since learning to smoke a pipe, and my stress level too, I believe has been reduced because I've discovered a much more comfortable way to actually enjoy smoking.
Pipes are a secret I've tried to share with other cig smokers. I've become almost a missionary for pipes and pipe tobacco. I've been met with bemused tolerance.
