I've has this forever and only recently read that this was Dunhill's effort to get into the freehand arena in the 1970's. It is unwieldy to smoke but a cool looking pipe nonetheless.

It is a unique one. Can't say that I'm attracted to it though. Do like how the texture carries on to the stem.

Looks like a chunk of coral or stone thats been eroded away by wind or water. Well that it was given to you as gift is the one cool thing it's got going for it. :puffy:

That pipe could have been carved by Preben Holm or Eric Nording, since it is an earlier pipe...I would guess its a Holm.
Everyone was turning out Danish style freehands then and even the traditional pipe brands wanted to have some freehands in their line up.
Collectors of Holm/Ben Wade pipes are interested in the Harcourt line.
Cool looking pipe!

Looks like something "Thing" from the Fantastic Four would have smoked.
I like it!

Hi

Is the pipe stamped Harcourt? I would swear that pipe is a Micoli (It has all of his character and design) placed in a Harcourt box.

The problem with blocky type free hands, in my opinion, is that it seems they have minimal effort put into them. They may all be different to a degree, but it seems to be a hunk of wood that was smoothed and carved in areas to make more appealing. Then a stem gets put somewhere and ta-da. You got yourself a freehand.

Yes, Andy; that pipe had the "honor" of winning the first round of the ugly pipe contest. The interesting thing about it is that Preben Holm's intitials are on the shank. Dunhill had him design some of the Harcourt pipes. I don't know what he was thinking when he made this beast.
