Most people in Ontario think that is Canada
See, that angry reaction you got from one of your fellow Canadians is precisely why I included the caveat about Ontario.

My only exposure to Canadians has been on this forum, but I've gotten the impression from two of them that Ontario is kind of a rough place to live (but then one of them is a bear and the other a cat, so I'm not sure how serious to take it).

It was at one time the most populous and prosperous place to live in Canada. The capitol was clean, modern, and bustling. Access to the Great Lakes for shipping meant booming manufacturing, and goods would flow in and out on the way to and from other provinces. When I grew up there, even in the small towns, the only reason you didn’t have a job was if you didn’t want one. It was high trust and safe.

I don’t recognize it any more.

I live five minutes to Ontario and 10 to Quebec. I grew up here, and spent lots of formative time across the border.
I really miss throwing the girls in the car and heading out for a day across the border. Hopefully we’ll be back to normal crossings soon, and I can resume my love affair with your country.

There's really no other place to defect to, you know? The reports from all over tell the whole world is a hellhole.
Pretty much everywhere else in the world you can smoke a pipe in public with your meal.
Learn to ride the chaos, that's what our forefathers did.
The reason I am so confident about the fate of Canada is the vast majority of people don't resist anything, the vultures have landed and no-one cares.

That'd be Germany before the viral thing. Fond memories.

The situation does look very grim. The demoralisation of Canadiana is widespread and it's not abating. The eclipse of the West started many years ago, but nobody heeded the warning to "get the bananas out of your ears" given by that Russian defector (same one I quoted in my post above—"nowhere to defect to"—carefully chosen words that those who've been paying attention would have recognised quickly), and what he predicted would happen were the warnings ignored has happened.

Complex issues that have been long in the making and are just now careening at high-speed towards a denouement of brutal societal entropy.

I'd say more but didn't want to steer the thread towards a discussion that would draw the trolls crying "political!! / racist!!!" or unwanted attention by unwanted observers. In the present climate, anyone who's not drinking the hopium kool-aid or who even hints about future social train wrecks or who stocks up on grain is being put on a watch list for "extremism".
