Hand Cut Stems

It took longer then I expected, but given the situation nowadays...

I had these pipes in for some hand cut stems. A local pipe guy, Rich Lewis did the work. The Charatan had a stem that was offset a bit, and the Barnes had a black stem. I was looking for something a little different, so I sourced some SEM ebonite and had these restemed.

Top notch work. Red/Black 8 swirl on the 1984 Upshall, and Orange/Black 8 swirl on the Ken Barnes ‘K’.

I have a Ropp that says "Hand Cut" on the stem; it's a straight apple with a raspberry color stem.

I see he is an authorized repairman for Radice. I might hit him up to replace the tenon (and get the old one out of the mortise from when it broke off). Been dragging ass a bit on getting it done.

I don't think he issued more "K" grades, this is from the 2018 run of pipes... Although I wish he would make more pipes. I haven't seen nor heard anything about more pipes coming from him.

I picked out the Orange/Black 8 swirl since it somewhat matched the stain color of the stummel, and I liked the look...

I have lived in Fargo for 40+ years and never visited the Lewis shop. And this from one who has been in many pipeshops world wide, from Davidoff's in Geneva to Dunhill's in London. It just adds truth to the old adage that we tend not to visit what's in our own backyard.

Very nice work! I have an Upshall Canadian from the 80s (Ken Barnes guessed 1984 as well) with a very similar style textured silver band.

Thank you! As an amateur pipemaker who thought about going into the profession in the 70s when I worked in a B&M pipeshop, but chose to pursue a career in the AF, I will look forward to my next trip to Minneapolis and a visit to his store. Our country slowly driving such artist out of business.

@alaskanpiper The gold band is hallmarked for 1984, so I would assume that's when it was made.
