We've had this as a topic in LD and PF debates (I am a HS debate coach) a few years ago, and after three rounds, we learned that there was a nuclear option on this one topic. You cannot argue that an embargo against Cuba is effective at all, when absolutely everyone in the world trades with them except the US. This actually ONLY hurts us Southern states who have been working to establish agricultural trade with Cuba.

As of now, the embargo is merely a "feel good" policy for expatriated Cubans here in the US. However, Cuba is still trading away with everyone around us. Europe, and the entire world. So, Cuba could care less about our silly embargo.

Really our "silly" little embargo"? You gest. It has kept Cuba a third rate backwater country for sixty years. Have you seen the poverty in that country?? They would be better off if the Mafia was still running the casinos there. No one visits Cuba for tourism any more, If we were to open the borders they would be overrun with Yankee dollars. We're the only country that can help them and they turned to other countries instead. It hasn't risen to a blip on the radar screen to us but to the Cubans it has been a major barrier to any kind of progress,

When you look at policy and it's affects, Cuba does more trade worldwide than any other Gulf Island - that is a debate's nuclear option. Really Cuba is what has kept Cuba back. But, the US embargo, the only ones you will hear asking for it's removal are Agricultural Red States like Alabama and Mississippi and cigar smokers. Cuba don't care. They are a European tourist Destination, with more planes coming and going than any other Gulf Island. And, I have hashed through the policies issues, page by page.

it's a great example of how money runs the show isn't it. And money in what pockets.
I think that also, we are in a political climate that when one party suggests something, the other side takes on a kneejerk political reaction to oppose, no matter whether there is no logic to it. Even though Bush started opening up channels to Cuba, it fell on Obama to decide whether we would proceed with opening up trades. This spun off the kneejerk reaction. Even though Castro is dead... we probably won't ever see open trade again.

I wish the Cuban people had a better deal somehow. The government is sort of a socialist yard sale. The Cuban economy just moved to Florida and is doing nicely, thank you. The bright side is, nothing has done more for American cars of the nineteen-fifties, which have been rebuilt by hand an infinity of times and are still rolling. The music, as always, if first rate. Cigars? I like DR better.

Canadians are were going to Cuba yearly during the winter, coming back with rum and 'tons' of toby if they so wished. I know a couple who did just that (except for the tobacco).

There's also 'health tourism': a number of Canadians, sick and tired of being kept sick by the suxialist medicare, flew to Cuba to get prompt treatment and surgeries.

Sure, the viral thing stopped all or most of that, but Cuba wasn't isolated by any means.

I just learned something new. Thanks.

What do LD and PF mean?

What do LD and PF mean?
LD means Lincoln Douglas, one on one debates, like what was established by Abe and Fredrick before they went across country debating slavery. It is a more philosophical debate, where you can bring in all sorts of Crit debates and side debates, and they can be very challenging.
BUT, these are not like any presidential debate we have had in my lifetime. Those are more just BS partisan rehashes.

PF means Public Forum debates, which are team based, 2 on 2 debates. These are more policy oriented, and the whole team can help back up research and strategy.

When I mentioned a "nuclear option" above, I was using a term for when a debate is so one-sidedly strong that there is no way to win when you draw a the contrary side to have to defend. For example, if it can be shown with no alternative research existing that Cuba does not stand to benefit nor falter if the US carries on an embargo, you can no longer defend the stance of pro embargo... in a debate. Of course, our elected politicians can still continue to lie to us and use those lies to defend an embargo, or just refuse to ever consider one. But, debates are based more in reality than politics are.

I have a lot of friends in Japan that also go to Cuba to spend the winters. They can then mail me a few Cuban sticks from Japan.

Thanks. I should have known about LD and PF as my daughter debated in HS. Man, I feel like a failed dad. I did make all her roller derby bouts though.

I guess this means that the Cuban embargo is a bad debate topic, with only one winning other side possible.

Yes, once all teams realize that a topic has a nuclear option, the kids just start playing with it, getting ridiculous. In our final flights, I instructed all of my PF teams to cry, ha ha. Just cry when you draw the Pro side.
For my LD’s, I told them to go Crit on it, and debate the morality of even debating the topic. I can’t remember how we scored, but we always take home at least on trophy.

I'll never forget one year around the holidays u.s. customs searched every incoming package. Terrorist threat. And the amount of Cuban cigars that they confiscated was an insanely high amount. Showing how the embargo isn't even really as effective as we're told it is on any front.

Now, if I remember correctly, you can bring back a limited number of sticks. I was surprised they even let people vacation there now.

I had a roommate in college who’s father was imprisoned in Cuba, for illegal exportation in his fishing boat. He was picked up by Cuban officials with crates of Cuban rum. But, he didn’t seem stressed about it. His father had been known to do things like this.
