Anniversary Kake. Mmmmmm the mere mention has me salivating. I've even dedicated a pipe to it. IMHO, in ten years time this will be one of the most sought after aged tobaccos. Buy some to jar!
I'll go ahead and plug Freight Train as another H&H blend I enjoy. Took me awhile to warm up to it and now I'm really liking it.

Viva AK! The revelation is here. This stuff just gets better and better. About a month ago I broke open a one year old, properly aged 8oz jar and the change is amazing. By properly I mean loose fill with about half inch clearance, stable temp, no light and quarter turns every 3 months. The VA sweetness is very noticeable and wonderful especially in the Perique, which most of us had hoped for. I've got jars older that I'm waiting for the five year mark, but I'll never be smoking any AK under one year again. Backorder pounds of it! The price will never be better and it will be locked in.

lols jiminks! I think the hording has been going on for some time now. 8oz. AK tins come in and they're gone off the site in a couple days. I'll bet more than half that come in are backorder fills. With this sale it will probably be the next few shipments.

I love Anniversary Kake. I'm waiting for a pound that I ordered. Still on backorder. I too would recommend Manor Heights. Its a great aro. I just got a 8 ounce tin. I'd give it a try.

Actually, you do write good reviews, Rothnh, and I would have said so in my earlier post, but it's no fun to compliment you when I'm already insulting you, too!
I've written eight of my eleven MacBaren reviews, and need to smoke the other stuff first so that I can post them all at once in a thread. I should be getting more Sutliff Private Stock to review soon. Hope Man's Best Friend is in the next batch. Or at least a cute looking blonde!!

Craig: what is the purpose of the "quarter turns every three months"? Does this ensure a more homogenous aging process in the jar? And from this, I assume that your jars are not upright, but lying on their sides.
Roth, I just bought an 8oz of Manor Heights based on your recommendation in an earlier thread. I saw "manhattan" and that's all the convincing I needed! I still have yet to try it. I've been smoking more aros lately, as my wife enjoys the "moustache note" more than VAs or lat blends

oh, and I also recently got a 8oz tin of Anni Kake. It's all jarred up in the small 4oz jars. I have yet to try it. Like I said, been smoking mostly aros lately

Murf- My quarter turn process came out of my daughter’s (bio-chemist) on-going ageing experiment with anaerobic bacteria on VA leaf in different environments. Once the oxygen is consumed by the aerobic bacteria the anaerobic start feeding on the dead aerobic bacteria and spreading across the leaf. It made sense that slightly exposing leaf that had no way of contact would increase growth. This is mainly for the 6” flakes that are stored on the side. By giving it just a quarter turn you aren’t twisting the flake, just opening the compressed stacks a little that have now started to shrink. I store the AK straight up so instead of giving it a shake separating the entire jar, which in my mind may be too much. I turn it on its side, quarter turn it which gives the small amount of movement and stand it up. Bacterial colonies are all about spreading, so you need contact. For now it takes what makes a difference in planks (6”flake) and best guessing on broken flake. How effective this is will be part of the next experiment where we’re adding many more parameters, including other cuts of VA. I’ve wondered about these benchmarks that have been set of 1, 5, 10, 20 years for noticeable ageing due to the slowing of the anaerobic growth. I think that all the experiments to come up with these numbers are based on vacuum sealed tobacco, not a jarred environment that allowed more aerobic bacteria to start thus allowing more anaerobic bacteria to form. Promoting more growth based on exposure. YES, I’m this bored.
As we passed the 6 month phase the oxygen (jarred) VA flake anaerobic bacteria percentage overcame the vacuum sealed (tinned). This also seems to be the time when the anaerobic bacteria really start to work. That’s why we do see 6 month change added to some lists I’ve seen. December will be the finish to this experiment and I’ll have final growth percentages at the first age point of one year. In the next phase I hope Syracuse will allow my daughter to use lab equipment to get screen shots. For now it’s just observational with a microscope. You have to remember that this is an un-willing daughter (had to pay her) doing something on a college campus where we are hated. She will be post grad which will give her more privileges and the need for more money ;)

Guys:
I'm an English smoker but have been purchasing and jarring 16 to 24 oz. "buys" of VAs and VaPers for the future.
Last night, Roth had me with his Manhattan reference. I've got a deep appreciation for classic cocktails and an even deeper appreciation for what will happen to the price of pipe tobacco in the years to come stateside.
I placed my first order of AK after reading this post and might place another before the month ends. If P&C is out I'll buy an equitable amount of Escudo. (Like real estate, buying tobacco on the come is shipping, shipping, shipping.)
Thank you, too, Craig, for your daughter's input. I've got an abudance of 4 oz. jars so I'll more than likely halve the flakes - assuming they come in flakes - and will extrapolate her findings accordingly.
Cheers,
Fnord

Very interesting research study. I might have to try this. Any reason for turning it at 3 month intervals? As opposed to weekly, for example?

Murf- The main reason is to do them all at once, no team of elves here ;) But with the "take off" noticed at 6 months it seemed the right time to expose more surface. So the three month is probably not needed, and may not be a good thing to do as this is when the growth seems to noticeably start. This keeps it simple by just doing it the first of every 3 months. The factual information on whether this makes a marked difference won't come until the next set of testing that will start January 1 2014. With the addition parameters added in the next set we will run that one out to five plus years. My hopes are that we see a big difference in the yearly results and the possibility of speeding up that all important 5 year benchmark. This one just deals with surface area in vacuum and oxygen ageing.
