HAHA i know the title is misleading, but what does everybody enjoy more (or find more useful), collecting pipes, or collecting tobacco.
If anything i am gonna try and use this thread to put my PAD in remission, its out of control haha.

I like and can appreciate a good pipe and own a few nice ones. But for me its all about the tobacco!
FYI, you might want to think twice about your thread title. It violates one of Kevin's biggest pet peeves.

Which is more important in defining the shape of a circle... the inside or the outside?
You can't have one without the other.

I don't suppose I collect as such,I have seventeen pipes (that's since 1954) but I do like to sample various tobaccos. All my empty tins go to eldest grandson to store small items and he has quite a collection so I suppose I/we collect empty baccy tins.

Im so new to this that i still buy both! Hopefully today ill get my other three pipes giving me 12 and also HOPEFULLy ill be done buying crap. At least till after the new year. More that i think about it i can say i may be leading towards more tobacco in the future than pipes.

I'm more fickle about tobacco than I am about pipes. I have a couple of mainstays that I smoke regularly, but I can't resist trying a new blend. Other than Latakias and CAO Cherry Bomb I've not tried a tobacco that I've hated. I have several bags and jars around, and the hard part becomes what to smoke next. I do look at pipes quite a bit, but I'm pretty well satisfied with the ones I have.

To be honest, I like both, The pipes because Im afflicted with a sick obsession with absolutley no control, and the tobacco because Im afflicted with a sick obsession with absolutley no control. They have a medical term for this, it's called being FU. :puffy:

The answer is "Yes". I smoke 6 or 10 pipes and I have collected 30 or 50 antique pipes. (mostly European.

I have only tried out 1 or 2 tobacco blends during the last 10 years until I found this site and have tasted a dozen or so in the last couple of months. But collect, no. Store and hoard maybe 4 blends, yes.

By now I know which tobaccos I like and which I don't.
But I'm always on the lookout for my next favorite pipe.

My favorite answer is 'all of the above'. I have to admit that, with almost 300 pipes in the last 4 years and now over 800 blends on hand, some people, including medical professionals might feel I have a problem, maybe two. But it's cheaper than therapy, and more effective.

Always looking for a select few pipes to add to the heard. Not from need but want. I've 45 or so now, p'raps 20 that see regular use.

But the "bullets", whole 'nuther story.

Pretty much know what I like but there are so many blends available I've yet to try...
PAD can be curtailed to some degree, TAD not so much!

Living outside of the U.S. may give me something of a more troubled perspective; but I tend to buy tobacco, and forgo pipe purchases (unless something really calls to me, or the price is just too good to pass up), and have around 20 pieces of briar and meerschaum that see action (and a half dozen cobs). I see this as working in my favour in three ways.

Firstly, tobacco will never be as cheap as it is today; it seems like every couple of weeks, someone is trying to increase the taxation by triple or even quadruple digits. We're even starting to see some of these bills stick; the proverbial flood gates are opening.

Secondly, being outside of the U.S. means that I have to order most of my preferred tobacco from internet E-tailers based in the U.S., and of course, love having the plethora of blends at my fingertips to try. This is a short-coming of the Canadian government to be certain, but it is a very real issue for me. I can forsee the day when I am unable to order tobacco through the mail, be it due to Canadian regulations, or American.

Third, tobacco is a great investment. A tin can double in value in a few short years. No other commodity on the market that I can conceive of acquiring sees growth at this rate. Now I certainly have no plans to sell off anything from my cellar, it is nice to know that if I ever need a chunk of change in an emergency, I know where to look. Now, certainly, high end pipes can also act as an investment, but the returns are no where near as high as with leaf - especially if you plan on smoking them (from an unsmoked state).

I have never counted my pipes, I have smoked pipes since the 1960's and have never parted with any of the pipes that I owned apart from binning a few that I deamed unsmokable, all my pipes are smoked and cleaned on a regular basis, I smoke about 4 bowls a day, sometimes more hardly ever less and each bowl is through a fresh pipe and these pipes are cleaned before I put them away, my collection is several hundred, I think, some pipes are special to me, what special occasion, what mountain top, what sunny day or which wife that I smoked it. Then Tobaccos, If you read my what age did you start smoking thread you will learn of my beginings, I have smoked hundreds of different Tobaccos over the years but like all of you my choice has opened up amazingly with the world wide web and I can have many, usually about 20 differend brands on the go at any one time, I am lucky because I have no real dislikes, I love the vast majority of tobaccos whether it is English or Aromatic and one thing we can do that was near impossible years ago and that is to know what tobbacos make up a brand. well I guess I am an incurable collector of pipes and definitely not a tobacco collector, I just can't keep them long enough.

Schmitzbitz definitely hit the nail on that one. Also, tobacco in Canada is about 3x the price as it is in some states in the US of A. For us it is much more cost effective to buy from south of the border, and like Schmitz said, there is a plethora of selection states side.

I also agree with Schmitzbitz, tobacco is only going to get higher in price and that is why I'm more into collecting tobaccos now. I have a very large supply on hand and have cut back a lot on my buying but I'll still get a new blend that intrigues me every once in a while. I've got an adequate supply of pipes to take care of my needs since I don't smoke nearly as much as I used to. 1-3 bowls a day is usually all I smoke.
