fitzy, fishnbanjo, I'll report back once I fully explore this new Group 1 dimension in pipes. Thanks!

I was looking at the stats of one that was sold on smokingpipes.com. I can't get over the weight. It's only 14 grams plus from what I can tell on other sites the prices are inexpensive. Under 70 on most.
I'm going to have to pick one up myself.

Here are some of my favorite sub Group 1, group 1, 1/2 (meaning group 1 bordering on 2)
10612542996_c3b5543ff9_c.jpg

Top:
Boswell Churchwarden less than a group 1
Left Side:
Comoy Blue Riband Billiard
Tim West Freehand Panel with Plateau Top
Dunhill Shell Quaint Cutty
Dunhill Shell from 1917 with real Ivory Spot
Right Side:
Sixten Ivarsson Craggy Apple with Bamboo Shank if I ream the cake it will probably conform to a 2 but I keep it dime thin all the time so it's a 1/2
Peterson pre-Republic Shamrock Billiard bordering on a 2
Anne Julie almost a Dublin Apple
Michael Lindner Bulldog 1/2
Bottom:
Benner Freehand

They are all so nicely proportioned, they could be any size pipes. Great collection.

This also revises my perspective on a local pipe carver's selection. I have always

looked past his small pipes, not knowing how they were used. Next time I visit him,

probably at the TAPS pipe show in April, I will have another look at those.

My Group 1 pipe, a Peterson yacht/zulu rusticated Belgique, has shipped! I ordered it earlier today.

This was from Iwan Ries, online, and it is still on offer for $58.40. I have found other Peterson

Group 1's, but all have been priced higher, and none have the yacht/zulu shape, which I favor.

Fitz, you might take a look at this one. Also at Iwan Ries, in the Group 2 category, there are some

Ewa's for $35 and change, which look like good French pipes. Iwan Ries is careful about its

inventory. I don't expect to buy a new Peterson pipe at this price, even a Group 1, again.

Fishnbanjo - do you have any other pictures of the panel? That looks like a nice pipe. What is the length of that pipe?

sfsteves, I like it! That's about my calculation before I launched this thread. I felt like a Group 1 must be for a one-minute

smoke. I know, the leprechauns do like them. Leave one around, and you might get a little pot of gold.

Pipe is 5 1/2" long, bowl height is 1 1/2", depth is 1 1/8", width of bowl is 5/8" here are some alternate photos with a tapered 6 1/2" pipe cleaner for reference. You should get some sense of size of the other pipes from this as well.

Thanks for the pics - that is a looker, nice grain too. It is about the dimensions of my Willmer, maybe a bit longer. I like the plateau top, a much underused feature in my opinion.

I'm in the middle of moving from cigarettes to pipe full time and when I'm really wanting a cigarette sometimes as a fall back I turn to my Savinelli Menuto. Very small pipe and bowl with the ability to add a RYO filter in the stem. I'll load a bowl of pure virgina shag flavoured with a little Mac Baren Vanilla Cream and smoke it like a cigarette (I.E. Inhaling) and it curbs the urges. A bigger bowlpipe would tear my lungs up and the Minuto is a perfect pocket pipe.

I have never been a fan of small pipes as they just look to small in my hand and face. I go for group 4-5 sized pipes and like being able to smoke for a couple of hours at a time. I also look at the prices of a group 1 or 2 and think to myself that is not a lot of briar for the money.

I use one at work. I sometimes can sneak 15 minutes for a break. It's just the right size, and often generates comments from non-smokers to its uniqueness.

I use a small bowl when I smoke a tobacco with a heavy nic hit like Tambolaka.

brudnic1, who makes (or sells) Tambolaka? It might be something to try in the aforementioned Group 1 when it arrives.
