Pure made up bullshit. I've noticed my whole life that groundhogs do not hibernate. Several of them little fuckers are always digging out the foundation to one side of the bridge to my house. I've always seen them all winter, digging through my garden, and eating up my carrots, turnips, lettuces and other winter crops. The little slime balls can all just take a dirtnap.
They also tear up my fences by dragging their fat asses over my wooden fences... 7 feet... breaking boards sometimes and definitely pulling some out of the nails.

The groundhogs will ultimately win and will be burrowing into your grave. They are legion. Expect them.

The Groundhog Day movie was actually filmed in Woodstock, IL. One year, we told our kids schools, that we, the Winton family, are going to Woodstock to take part in the Groundhog Day event. My daughter had to write a paper about the holiday. This is a once in a lifetime event. (If you do it once, you don't have to do it again.) We still try to watch the movie every year.

Good/funny movie, and yes, it was filmed in Woodstock, IL… w/some footage in Pittsburgh. Here’s some movie trivia if interested: Groundhog Day (1993) - IMDb - https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0107048/trivia

They are actually some strong and agile critters. I put out a live trap the first year I lived here, because they are dropping my bridge into the creek. The thing was made of 5 gauge welded steel wire, and it just tore its way out like it was made of string.
Try a # 5 Bridger spring trap upside down over the opening to the critter's burrow. They get curious eventually and poke their head out to look around.
