In response to a number of posts in this thread:

  • I picked up a set of 12 wide-mouth Bell 16 oz canning jars for less than it cost for the humidor bag that hasn't arrived yet (and may be going back) and have stored the tobacco. All the jars and a vacuum-sealed container I normally use for coffee have been filled. I would've picked up two sets, but the store only had the one wide-mouth set this size (Aside: These are marked up close to and sometimes over twice as much on Amazon and select other online outlets). Bonus: While storing the tobacco, I discovered that I was accidentally sent two bags of one of the blends. I'm going to write the company and let them know.
  • Strauss is a nice store. I've visited it a number of times over the years. I actually worked in the same building, both towers, for some time, which made it easy.
  • I spent much of my childhood in Anderson Township in a subdivision called Clarendon Hills.
  • When looking at houses years ago, one of them was a beautiful home at the end of a nice street in Pleasant Ridge. It was something of a fairy tale cottage, different than many of the houses I had looked at.
  • One of my sisters lives in South Caroline and I've visited North Carolina many times. I'm also a fan of Skyline Chili and have always enjoyed getting lost in the Ohio Bookstore (which takes up an entire building in downtown Cincinnati, for those who haven't been), which has been around much longer than I have.
  • West Virginia is beautiful. I've a lot of relatives there. Both my parents were born there.
  • My family tree, at least a large part of it, was planted in Germany - specifically, the Black Forest region (which is where many fairy tales you've most likely heard originate). I've never been, but would like to visit.
  • Thanks again to all the other places around the states and world who responded.

Are you referring to the Strauss downtown or the one in Florence? Just curious. Good luck in your journey. I've met several pipe smokers from Cincy at the Columbus Pipe show.

Thank you for your update on the Ohio Bookstore. I was going to ask if it is still there, and I am pretty pleased that it is. It's an old brick building of three or four stories in the downtown full from bottom to top with shelved used books, pretty well organized.

In order to save on electricity, when you get off the slow elevator, you pull an overhead string to turn on the lights in the particular aisle you want and then turn it off when you go to the next aisle or floor. As all book lovers will realize, this is a nearly unparalleled treasure hunt.

I have to admit, the experience is dreamlike. Confronted with the third floor of floor to ceiling books, the possibilities are dizzying, and you must eventually march away to eat or use a restroom, but the experience cannot be forgotten.

You either leave with an armload of books or become frozen in the vastness of choices, or both. Outside, down the street, there is a fountain where you can stand and meditate upon it all.

Welcome, from the Oregon coast.

I purchased the same Whitluck's kit from Amazon and also followed that up by unintentionally purchasing a very large amount of bulk tobacco (and not the good stuff).

Thank you. Sorry to hear about your not having a great experience with the tobacco you bought. Hope you come across some you enjoy.

I don't know how I feel about all the tobacco I purchased, but notice differences (both subtle and significant) in the experience depending on the pipe*, how I've set it up and other factors. I imagine that the experience continues to evolve for as long as you continue using pipes - and differs for everyone. Reading this back, it seems like common sense, but as this is new to me, these aren't things I've considered.

* Oh, I now have more pipes. Hello, estate sales and auctions. Ha.

Welcome from Kansas! If you spend more time working on em than you do riding em they must be Triumphs.;)

Thanks!

I'm fairly certain Harley Davidson's lawyers may come after you for trademark infringement... Ha. I love most bikes. Quite a few of them that spent time in my garage were tinkered with on a weekly basis, for sure (and a few were tweaked on a per ride basis). I think this is where I'm supposed to say it's all part of the charm... and there's truth to that, if you're into it (and, looking in the hindsight rearview mirror, I guess I qualify).

Kansas. I once drove from Utah to Ohio. This may not be entirely true, but my anecdotal mind recalls being able to see the other side of the state even before crossing the border. Ha. It'd be nice to get back there some day to spend more time.

Well, I was an HD master tech yet do not own one if that tells ya anything. Although I have subjected myself to many Triumphs 😂. Mostly XS650’s and small CB’s now though. In all fairness you have to get at least half way across Kansas to see the other side…
