Back in March, while stuck at home during the shelter in place, I pulled out my stash of old pipes that had been gathering dust since the 1980’s. After researching pipe restoration, I decided to treat several stems to an Oxyclean bath, cleaned out stems and mortises with some Wild Turkey 101, made a trip to the local tobacco store and fired up some tasty (but bitey!) aromatic blends.
Several of the old pipes were ok smokers but my favorite was a Savinelli Roma 707 - which I smoked several times before I realized there was an actual filter jammed in there since I first bought it sometime in the 80’s. A needle nose pliers revealed a filter that was as brown as the rustication! A little TLC and a thorough cleaning has turned this707 into one of my best smokers.
Now several months and several new pipes later, I have discovered a liking for English blends, particularly Sutliff Match 20, GLP Quiet Nights and an “English Oriental” from Mission Pipe Shop. Looking forward to branching out and discovering the wide world of tobacco and enjoying the various recommendations in these forums.
