Hello all,

Really excited to be part of this very interesting forum. I'm learning so much from you all!

I've been involved with tobacco on and off for about 30 years, having grown up around it in Kentucky. I started socially with cigars, and then moved to pipes for several months before switching to dip for many years. I quit the dip for about a decade then found myself with a very stressful job and needed an outlet--the cigars came back. Then, I ran across some estate pipes (I only know that term because of this forum) in a gift shop in Natchitoches a couple months ago and a seed was planted. I didn't realize it was a Virginia seed and here we are.

I do have a local B&M tobacco store from which I tried out a cheap briar and even cheaper Cavendish that thoroughly fried my tongue. (Super Value my ass.) I just picked up an MM Country Gentleman and have now broken it in with some samples I picked up at SPC (thanks for the recommendation from so many). So far my favorite is C&D Habana Daydream, which is the best smoke of any form I've ever had right out of the little baggie. I'm still trying other things but at the moment this will be my daily.

Anyway, I now live in SE Louisiana, about 20 miles east of where all the Perique in the world is evidently grown. The weather here, plus my back patio enclosed on 3 sides, plus my current job with minimum demands, leaves me with time to enjoy a bowl every few hours year round, much to my wife's chagrin.

I thank each of you for sharing so much knowledge in such a friendly and funny way. I look forward to learning more about this hobby and all of you.

I might have misread this but you make Kentucky sound like the middle of PA.

That stuff isn't great for new smokers. Every new smoker or nasal snuffer says they are going gentle or slow and just aren't yet. But that said even with being a pipe smoker for thirty years roughly some blends warrent caution.

Two of my favorites are cigar leaf blends. Key Largo is probably my favorite blends for special occasions. And I also find the Bankers by James Fox to be an incredible cigar leaf blend. Side note have had random strangers tell me that both smell wonderful.

If it's not there it's technically not Perique.

Nice.

Hiking is awesome too by the way and pipes are great on hikes. In my opinion the two best types of pipes for hiking are cobs and a quality tyrolean (you've seen them before even if you don't know the name, feel free to look it up). The cob because it just fits and not such a big deal if it's lost or destroyed. The Tyrolean because a good one is a great clencher and is very functional in that situation.

Welcome from Michigan's Upper Peninsula!

I too smoked cigars before trying pipes, but still thought I wanted the cigar experience in pipe form, not yet realizing that pipe tobacco offers a wider variety. I still can't decide whether I prefer Habana Daydream or Billy Budd: both are very pleasant, both are very enjoyable. I haven't tried Key Largo yet, but that will be soon.
