Hello everyone!
Finally picked up pipe smoking a year ago because my role model I had since childhood smoked a pipe. Never smoked anything else before.
Until this summer I've been living in a campus dorm for many years so I couldn't smoke often as I had to take a lengthy walk outside campus to do so. Now I live in apartment and can at least smoke at the balcony or take a short walk to the bench outside.
Local tobacco shops have very poor selection of pipe tobacco, so I shop online. Heavily taxed so I have to pay a hefty sum, but hey, at least I don't smoke very often. Currently smoking Peterson Connoisseur Choice and Mac Baren 7 Seas Regular from my Italian basket pipe, but I plan to get a Peterson and branch out to English tobacco with Ashton Consummate Gentleman soon.
Slayer,
Welcome. It's neat to hear from you in order to see how the pipe culture has developed in different countries outside of my own (the US).
Have you heard about "Herzegovina Flor"? During the Russian Imperial era, people started growing it in the Black Sea area. They brought it there from the Yugoslavian or Bosnian regions. It's an Oriental Leaf and nowadays it's still grown in a range running from Croatia in the west to Dagestan and the Caucasus in the East. One of the companies still making it in Russia is called Tabak Yuga (Табак Юга).
Sometime in the imperial or Soviet period they started putting it in filterless cigarettes and packing them in packets that looked like green portcigar boxes. One of those boxes cost about a weeks' work of everyday filterless cigarettes. One reviewer who got a hold of the Soviet ones said that the smoke from it was luxuriant (blagorodny),
, soft, and didn't hurt the throat at all like some cheap filterless tobacco can. You can also put the tobacco in pipes. Nowadays you can only get those green boxes from what I've seen as collector's items online, and they run like $40-200 a piece.
Looking forward to hearing from you again.
