Hi,

I turned 48 yesterday, so I figured I'm old enough to finally register here. My nickname is Scalex [pron. 'skaleks - it's of Latin origin, not English], my real first name is Miroslav (or Mirek for short).

I was a complete non-smoker until I was 33, then one day I saw a pipe smoker in a pub (back in the days when you could smoke in pubs) doing all the rituals. Preparing the tobacco, selecting the pipe, stuffing it, lighting it, smoking it and then cleaning and maintaining the pipe. I said to myself, "This is smoking the way God made it up!" and I bought my first pipe and some horrible hyper-aromatic tobacco.

Today I have about seventy pipes, but I'm still an occasional smoker - sometimes I'll have three pipes a week and sometimes I'll have nothing for a month.

I like different tobaccos. My most frequently smoked are Orlik Bull's Eye, Rattray's Hal O'The Wynd, Samuel Gawith's Perfection, Gawith & Hoggarth's Coniston and Peterson's University Flake. Unfortunately, some of my favourite tobaccos are only smoked from my own stock as they are no longer in production.

Unfortunately, as a resident of the European Union, I do not have access to American tobaccos. Due to strict regulations, it is not possible to order tobacco and have it shipped to my country. I am extremely sorry about this, because some time ago I tasted some great tobaccos from G.L. Pease or Cornell & Diehl, and I would love to fill my tobacco cellar with such tobaccos. But alas, it is not possible, which I consider a crime against humanity.

As for me, I make my living as a copywriter for the government, translating clerical and legal language into human language. My hobbies, apart from pipes, are mainly music (both active and passive) and the role of a costumed guide in a Central Bohemian castle.

[I use DeepL to translate from Czech to English; sorry if there is some nonsense in the text caused by the fact that I wrote something in Czech that the translator couldn't handle]

Welcome! Home of the popular Czech tool that most every pipe smoker owns… I probably have a dozen of them… ha.

Yes, I know that in the world it is called Czech, here in the Czech Republic we call it either "taptatko" or "dusatko" - these are Czech words for tamper. Sometimes we call it "CePeTe" after the abbreviation Czech Pipe Tool. I was surprised that it is often sold quite dearly in the world - in our tobacco shops this tool costs 70-90 cents. And it is true that we Czech pipe smokers have CPT everywhere. A few in the car, in the pockets of every pair of trousers and every jacket, in briefcases, in desk drawers, in the workshop, in the garden sitting area and so on. My wife sometimes jokes that while the average man carries a condom just in case, we pipe smokers carry a Czech Pipe Tool, Zippo flints, and a sample of tobacco to swap if we meet another pipe smoker.

Welcome Mirek! I do have the same case for not being able to get USA pipetobacco being a EU citizen, but there are great shops in Germany that are willing to ship and have a great selection. I had contact with a shop in Praha (I believe) that couldnt ship to me because of customs. What's up with free traffic of goods haha. There are some awesome pipemakers in CZ like Martin Cermak and Biftek.
