Hello everybody,

I've been a pipe smoker on and off for over 20 years. Most of my pipes are going to be basket pipes, but I do have a few nicer briars and a couple of meerschaums. I also love smoking the cobs. My preferences are for the more naturally flavored tobaccos, i.e. VaPers, English, Kentucky Dark Fired, etc... For me personally, aeromatics are more likely to give me bad tongue bite, though not all are bad.

Also, last year, I tried growing some of my own tobacco. Curing it in my dry climate is proving to be challenging. I have settled on fermenting it being the best method for my climate. Last year, I put the tobacco into a milk crate, covered it to keep most of the air off of it and put a lot of weight on it. It's not good tobacco, but there is potential there. Every once in a while when smoking it, I get hints of marshmallow. IMO, it's simply a matter of the tobacco not having been cured enough. Next year, I'm going to grow a bunch and put it in a stone crock, covered and compressed, and I'm going to mix it up every few months and then repack it.

Maybe it's just who I hang out with, but I'm seeing pipe smoking making a resurgence here. It's the only civilized way to smoke. Pipes > Cigars > Cigarettes. (That being said, if you want to offer me a nice cigar, I won't turn you down

One thing I forgot to add is that I had to quit smoking for around a year and a half due to sinus issues. I'd go into the doc with sinus problems and they'd just prescribe antibiotics, which does no good when you're fighting a fungal infection that was caused by antibiotics killing all the beneficial bacteria off. Had to have surgery last year to open the windows up because nothing was getting in our out, so I quit smoking while that healed. Now that my sinuses are open, I'm finding that the pipe smoke is keeping the fungus knocked back. Makes sense to me, because smoke has traditionally been used as a mild preservative because it keeps a lot of the organisms that will spoil meat knocked back.

Well he'll I'm glad your better, do you frequent any of the shopes around, I have to travel from Santa Fe because our Stags stopped carrying tins. It's not that bad I just make a day of it.

I wouldn't say frequent, but I do go into Monte's and Stag from time to time. Went in with my niece last weekend and picked up a couple of new cobs. One is for a friend in TX who's going to let me hunt on his homestead this year since I didn't draw for any hunts here.

Both Monte's Pipes and Cigars and The Stag Tobacconist have a 'club' of sorts, but I don't hang out in those clubs, so I can't tell you what, if any, dues there are, rules, etc...
