Heyyyyy guys!

My name is Bailey and I joined this site for some help!

My boyfriend and I are about to have our 2nd anniversary and he really loves pipe smoking! I swear, he's got like 15 different pipes and tons of different brands of tobacco! Its Insaaaaane :) But anyway, I was hoping to get him a nice blend for our anniversary, and thought i'd ask around and see if I couldn't get any advice on where to look/what to avoid etc!

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Im really new to this so sorry if Im asking the wrong questions!

Thanks!

First off welcome from MN!

What are some of the blends he currently likes and dislikes?

Yup time for some recon. There are many different choices. What do his current blends smell like when he smokes them?

If you can spend a little time with his stash of tobacco without raising suspicions that would help. What you want are both the brand of the tobacco and the name of the specific blend, since most brands make a number of blends. If you can give us three or four examples of what he seems to smoke the most, we might suggest similar blends, or you could just get him another tin of one of those. This information might come from round or rectangular tins, pouches which are little fold-up cellophane or foil packages, or jars he has labeled himself, if he labels things pretty well. I have to say, my wife has an uncanny sense for buying me both pipes and blends. If he's a talker, he might give you information in conversation, but if he's kind of private, you might have to do the recon.

Welcome from Western Canada! The advice for gathering some information to guide any suggestions is good. Your boyfriend is probably going to enjoy the blend you choose for him whether it is one of his favourites or a new blend to him because you are supporting his interest in pipe smoking. Like mso489, my wife has gifted me several great pipes and blends.

Welcome aboard from Central Kentucky! Yeah, see what he favors and let us know.?

Both my wife and I have collected pipes and tobacco for years and in recent years she's bought most of my tobacco and pipes.

Welcome Bailey!

Yes, be sneaky and dig around his tobacco's! But be careful, and put everything back the way it was! I'd know right away if my things were touched. Haha.

Avoid the big bags of "pipe tobacco" in the gas stations. That's not actually pipe tobacco. It's roll your own cigarettes stuff. And if you like the smell of one of his blends, tell him, and ask what it is!

Oh and you are a smoker yourself??

If I were you, I would explain your situation to Smoking Pipes dot com and see if they have a gift certificate you can get him, or maybe open a prefunded account or something. One thing about pipe smokers and their tobacco, if someone buys the wrong thing its like buying dad that purple poka dot tie for christmas, it'll never get worn outside of the house. If you get him something he doesn't like, he'll smoke one bowl and never pick it up again.

Welcome from NE FL. I lived most of my adult life in L.S. I moved to FL 12 years ago but, my 4 daughters and their families still live there. Diebels Sportsman Gallery on the Plaza and in Leewood or Cigar and Tobac in O.P. are probably about the only 2 shops that will have any pipe tobacco selection in the metro anymore. Diebels has gone to mostly cigars and paraphernalia and I believe Cigar and Tobac holds pipe club meetings so, they may be your best bet for local help. If you wish to order online, any of us could give you recs. If you look at his stash and tell us a few blends he has, we can lead you in the right direction. I used to manage tobacco shops in the KC area but they are no longer around.

Here
Welcome to the forum.

If you want to eliminate the guesswork, you could always get him a nice pipe lighter or other accessory that he will likely use with any pipe or tobacco.

Go to Smokingpipes website or any of the sponsor links in the left hand column of this page and look for the accessories link.

HERE for example, is a classic that won't break the bank (too badly, haha...)

itsameBailey, I checked out Cigar and Tabac and Diebels websites. It has been a couple of years since I have been in either store. You might opt for one of Diebels (sorry my apostrophe key is not working) private blends. The founder of McClelland tobacco (a much admired KC tobacco company, now defunct) got his start at Fred Diebels years ago. All of his blends used to be McClelland tobacco. I am sure that they have had to go to other sources. It might be nice to inquire if they have any old tins stashed (probably sold at a premium, if even available). Any of their private blends, old or new, would probably be a nice gift.

Lees Summit, Mo. ... I had to check because of my wife and my Missouri connections. She grew up in far northeast Mo. near the Iowa line and the Mississippi. Lees Summit is a southwest suburb of Kansas City, which as most of us know, is in Missouri.

Any progress?

I second (or third?) anotherbob's suggestion. Go to a tobacconist and get one you think smells good. I know that my wife loves it when I smoke blends that she's given me around her, and I love that she loves it. It's a win-win.
