Hello and welcome to the group from Montreal, Canada!

Although, I haven't smoked them, I have heard of the wonderful pipe makers Tsuge from Japan. They seem to have some well priced models. They might even be less expensive for you in Japan.

Welcome from Florida. The first thing I would do is buy a quality pipe like a Tsuge or Winslow. I would then try the following tobacco.
Peterson Flake
Peterson Navy Rolls
Peterson Univesity Flake
Peterson Irish Flake

All are easily found and none are hard to gets. I would then begin reading about how to smoke flake tobacco using the cube cut and the fold and stuff. Once you become proficient at this, then the entire world of pipe smoking will be available to you.

I never recommend a cob and some cheap aromatic. Waste of time and money in my opinion.

Welcome from the Pacific NW.

I would ask a Japanese member for samples, as shipping would be do-able. When my sister took up the pipe, I sent her examples of every type of tobacco I could think of, but with extras of straight Virginia, because that's my favorite.

As far as pipes, you've got some of the best pipe-makers in the world right where you are, so I would take advantage of that.

Hi Silvia,

Welcome from Sydney, Oz

There are good pipes to be had sub-$50 with a bit of looking.
More so if you don't mind an estate (pre-owned) pipe.
Site sponsors eg Blue Room Briars, The Danish Pipe Shop and SmokingPipes are good places to start your search

And of course there are corn cobs.

As for tobacco blends, Tobacco Reviews is a good reference site esp reviews by esteemed member @JimInks and Pipestud

I hope you stick around and continue to enjoy this most relaxing of pasttimes

Thank you I will look into them! :)

Also, my husband will go back to Italy for a month or so and he is in charge of buying me a good pipe.
Salvinelli seems like a very good brand, any suggestion on the model or other good brands? (I understand that much depends on personal taste, but I have just started so I haven't discovered my preferences yet).

what's available locally?
At the local shop I have seen:
- Captain Black
- Borkum Riff
- Galleria
- Half & Half
- Mac Baren

I have also found this website that sells online (the name starts with Ginza - the most luxurious area in Tokyo - so I think they have good tabacco)

Is there any must-try?

You have lots of choice if your husband is travelling to Italy.

Rather than giving a recommendation without knowing your personal taste, may I suggest browsing through the range offered by several retail sites to determine if you have a preference.

Sponsor LePipe.it has a very good selection of pipes, many by Italian artisans.

Savinelli have a good site where you can browse through their shapes and different series which will give you a good overview.

Rossi is now owned by Savinelli and offers similar shapes as Savinelli, but at a lower price. While I don’t have any Rossi pipes, they are often recommended by Forums members as a good value brand

Happy shopping
