BriarsAndBottles, if you did have time to get to downtown Chicago, you probably know about Iwan Ries, a Chicago pipe shop and lounge since 1857. It's on Wabash St. not far from the Art Institute and Millennial Park. I think it is the oldest pipe shop in the U.S. They say they have a pipe inventory of 15,000 pipes.

I also liked Nat Sherman in Manhattan, but it was not nearly so old and closed a few years ago.

I’ll have to check it out! I assumed it’d be closed like good ol Grants in San Francisco. I got to visit it a few times before closed its doors.

Love the humor in your o.p.! You'll fit right in here, as many, some. a few well, just me perhaps -of us are slobs pretending to have it all together when it comes to pipes and tobacco.
