I started smoking a pipe in 1959 but had given it up for many years. I stopped smoking cigarettes in 1989--and all other forms of tobacco at the same time. I have several pipes that could be worth a lot of money but have no desire to sell them yet. What I am looking for are two brands of my favorite tobacco back in those days but haven't been available for some time. I'm looking for a Balkan Sobranie substitute and also a Flying Dutchman substitute as well. Any suggestions? Thanks, Mark

Welcome from Central Texas.

I have never found anything to match Balkan Sobranie, including the rarely available current version of BS, but I can recommend both Black House and White Knight as tasty alternatives. The lack of a good flavor match to the original BS that you remember is largely due to the fact that Syrian Latakia in its traditional form is a thing of the past.

Flying Dutchman matches are close to the original, and in my mind, a bit better since they don't goop up your pipe as the original did Gor me.

Hope you enjoy this forum. There are many knowledgeable pipers here. Cheers!
