Burgenland is the easternmost region of Austria with a beautifull landscape, settled and cultivated since roman times. It is ethnically diverse with hungarian and croatian miniority population as well as some Roma and Sinti settlements. It is also Austrias foremost red wine region know for the local varietal Blaufraenkischer.
After WWII it was ten years under russian occupancy which lead amongst other things to the mass exodus to the US. For more than 40 years it was Europes ultimate eastern frontier to the Warsaw Pact Nations encircled by the Iron Curtain. But in 1989 it was there were Austrians and Hungarians cut through the barbwire to rejoin a region commonly shared for hundred of years - the Berlin Wall fell a couple of weeks later...
It is still estimated that there a more people of burgenlaendisch lineage in the US than in Burgenland itself (current population est. 290,000).
So if you have the chance to pinpoint were your grandparents came from I'm sure you will find there nowadays a small prospering village and a good place to reconnect with your familial roots.

multu', welcome aboard. You might be interested to know that one of our sponsor sites, 4noggins, makes special efforts to serve overseas customers, and 4noggins is also a member of Forums. I suspect most Forums members would be interested to know about availability and prices of pipes and tobaccos in Vienna and about the pipe smoking culture there. Vienna is renown as a beautiful city and I'd like to get there. I have enjoyed Paris, Amsterdam, London, and Dublin.

Wilkommen
Ich hab' nicht in zwantzig Jahre Deutsch geschprochen, und mein Grammatik ist sehr schlecht. Aber Ich kann die Oesterreichische Dialekt nicht verstanden, so there's that anyway.
So now that I've sadly massacred your proud language - Cheers and Welcome.

Gruss Gott Hannes

I have a brother, aunts, uncle, and cousins living in Voecklabruck. Do you have any pipes from David Wagner? Next time I come over I thought I would visit his shop in Gmunden and maybe have him carve a pipe for me.

Cheers

Jeff

Welcome Hannes! I lived in Germany as a boy and my parents spent a lot of time taking us to Austria, primarily the Linz/Salzburg areas (they were married in Linz after WWII). My German is quite poor, so I won't embarrass myself, but enjoy the forum.

As I'm an handy artisian I treat myself once a year to 2lbs of Rich's wounderfull candle making supplies :D so that source is covered!
I will give some links to pipeshops if people are interested put they are quite oldfashioned (no adavanced webshop) and most of the offerings are 9mm filter pipes.
Regarding Tobacco I think the major difference is that you can't by bulk tobacco, everything has to be prepacked and with a tax seal. So the difference in price is mostley due to the packaging (tins, vs. tubs and vinyl zip locks). Dunhill tins 50g are about EUR 12-16 the same goes for SG. McB 100g tins are about EUR 20-22 and pouch -tobacco is about EUR 7-8 cheaper offerings for Aro's are also available. The absolut bottom is a defacto bulk english from Dan Tobacco for EUR 73 per 1,000 gramm.

I was not familiar with David Wagner as I'm not yet into the higher end handmade (>EUR 400) stuff - but those pipes do look mighty fine

Welcome to the forum.
First, I am a big fan of Grüner Veltliner. Anyone who enjoys wine should try some. It is a staple at our house during the fall and is a must for Thanksgiving dinner.
I am headed to Vienna for a conference in early October and am really looking forward to it. I am half Austrian by heritage, so it will have a special resonance for me I hope.
