Greetings from Toronto, Canada.

How did you find your way from Sweden to the Philippines?

Beautiful Stanwell. I also have one with the two stems that transforms into a churchy.

Happy to hear there is at least one place to get good quality tobacco there.

Hello fellow pipe smokers,

The sun has set here in Manila. It’s a pleasant 82 degrees, with a light drizzle falling under a black sky. You can feel the thick, humid air sticking to your skin in a clammy embrace. On my 21st-floor balcony, I’m overwhelmed by the city’s soundscape: a cacophony of car horns, the high-pitched screech of tires, a jarring off-key karaoke singer, the angry hisses of stray cats fighting a turf war, a low hum of chattering crowds, punctuated by the distant wail of sirens.

And yet, this is where I find peace. Leaning back in a cushioned chair, with a lantern on a round table beside me, smoking a bowl of Nightcap in my beloved Stanwell pipe. The rich, smoky scent of Latakia, reminiscent of a cozy campfire, hangs heavy in the air, intensified by the warm, flickering candlelight glow from my lantern.

I've loved pipe smoking since my early twenties, back when I still lived in Sweden. Now, almost 20 years later, I still carry on with a daily bowl on the other side of the world.

I don’t know any pipe smokers where I live – perhaps that’s because it’s damn near impossible to actually find any pipe tobacco to smoke in this country. Luckily, the one shop I know of imports great products, albeit in small quantities.

Here's my modest pipe collection:

And this is my favorite, a Stanwell H.C. Anderson that I imported from Denmark a few years ago:

Here's what it looked like when it was new:

It came with two stems, so you can make it a churchwarden when the mood strikes. I really miss how it looked when it was brand new, and I wonder how I can restore it. I want to get the beautiful rim color back, and the silver detail is now... well, not resembling silver. Any advice on restoration would be greatly appreciated!

Here are a few of my favorite pipe tobaccos:

That's all from me, folks.

Feel free to drop a line here, I'd be happy to make new pipe friends. If, by any microscopic chance, there's someone here who happens to be living in the Philippines, it would be great to smoke a bowl together sometime.

Best wishes,
Makulit

Hello and welcome from West Virginia, USA. That was a very well written introduction. You must be a writer by trade. "It was a dark and stormy night, suddenly a pipe was lighted." My great-grandparents came to the U.S.A. from Sweden. I hope you enjoy the forum. Many wise and nice individuals here.

Thank you, everyone. Nice to see so many of you from all these different countries. I hope everyone's having a nice day.

I had previously spent a few years in China and wanted to see what it's like in another Asian country. Learning to speak Mandarin was exhausting, so I didn't want to go through that experience again. While looking for the next country, I realized that everyone speaks English in the Philippines. That did it for me!

Great to hear that you also have a Stanwell. I'm hoping I'll own at least one more from them down the line. I've always wanted to add a Savinelli or Peterson to my collection, so I guess those need to come first. Have you ever tried a P-lip pipe from Peterson?

Photography is hobby of mine. I wish I had more time to learn the craft, but sadly I never get to play around with my camera as much as I'd like to.

Thank you, sir.

How nice to hear that you've got some Swedish blood in you. Do you have any idea where in Sweden they came from?

Many Swedes emigrated to America in the mid-late 19th century. Times were tough in Sweden back then, and a lot of people lived in poverty. Farmers sold their land for next to nothing, barely scraping together enough money to afford a one-way ticket to the "new world" across the Atlantic ocean. Some didn't survive the 2 or 3 months long journey on the boat.

My Great-Grandparents came from Gamleby, Sweden. We believe that their last name had been Johanson. Some Swedes changed their names to Johnson when they arrived in the US. My Grandfather decided to change his last name to his best friend's in Gamleby, whose last name was Ankleberg. Talk about screwing up trying to locate the family history.

I grew up about 3 hours away from where Gamleby is.

You may have a few distant relatives in Sweden. A lot of the old church books are preserved and digitalized these days, making it easier to map out your family tree. It would be great to hear if you manage to find some clues to your family history one day.

Welcome from Arizona!
A nice collection of pipes, I have a couple of Stanwells and they are all great smokers! I have had my eye on their Anderson line as well.
